I am sure these have been covered already but anything that is worth watching is far and in between. I will share my take regardless.
Wednesday Addams
Everyone likes the Addams Family and I am sure it has to be because of Wednesday. If you like The Addams Family for anyone else in it, then you are wrong.
Usually, I would avoid a new show based on a classic for quite a while and kinda give in after it is well forgotten then watch it.
At least, I don't regret watching Wednesday as soon as it got uploaded.
It is dry, funny and not half bad at all. In a way it combines my favourites from the good 'ol Disney channel days. Mystery, some Teenage drama and brings in some Goosebumps with a surprisingly not-shit plot.
The actress Jenna Ortega or whatnot does a very good job actually rounding out Wednesday turning her from a purely dark and obsessed person which can seem flat to someone who is just 80% Freak and 20% hot-blooded.
I never dived into Wednesday but my guess is she is the only "pure" human in her family, which makes things, like her facing her mortality and or actually being close to others, stand out a lot more.
She obviously struggles with that at times and this is the depth brought to this new Wednesday.
They did steer rather close to pure teen bullshit but hopefully, bring it back into a more sinister yet humor-filled story for the second season.
1899
If you have seen Dark then the format of this show will not be a surprise. It is just as convoluted yet intriguing and by the looks of the ending paves the way for some massive cross-genre expansion.
Think of a victorian era war movie turning into a sci-fi epic. That is potentially 1899.
As for this first season, it builds a lot dropping just enough info each episode to make it progress well enough.
I personally watched the subtitled version which I think is best. My coworker said he watched an English only version, which does not make sense to me how but whatever.
Dark was purely in German. This one says hold my beer and hits you with probably like 5 languages all in one show. It does make you wonder why this has not been done before. Not many shows I ever recall had so many alternative languages which they did not bridge in some plot hole of a translation mechanic.
Now you basically have a ship in the 1800's filled with people who do not understand each other but have to figure out what madness is going on.
It is a solid mindgames show albeit they stray close to being too abstract.
I do wonder if they reveal everything whether the reason for not just being clear about what is happening is because it would kind of fall flat.
There are some Inception concepts taken to a new limit and the play on time periods they cross is also interesting. It is especially the time periods that make it not so easy as just saying that it is like Inception.
Overall it is a great show, after that I don't think there is anything to watch so savour it until end next year most likely.
