The Last of Us: When We are in Need - Episode 8 - Personal Opinion

This past weekend was wild with all the sports events, UFC, F1, Futbol it was not the regular schedule and I was thinking closer to the end of the day "All I need for today is a great episode of The Last of Us" and this probably one of the best episodes, I could say episodes 1,5 and 8 are the best of the season, there is only one episode left. I don't know if they are going to cover game one in one season, I hope they don't since then we have more episodes, I wouldn't mind if they don't, on this episode we see both Ellie and Joel going wild trying to survive but the most special thing is that they are giving everything to defend each other without really knowing what's happening, we finally see Joel giving everything for Ellie. After they left Tommy seems like a new start for Joel, looking for Ellie and feeling closer to her, she is not only a business for him anymore.

On this episodes we get introduce to new characters with their leader been David, he is the man in charge for a small town of people who are trying to survive, at first we see him comfort a girl who lost her father recently and wants to burry him but David said the ground is too cold and will until spring, Im no geologist but that sounds like BS.

Second new character is James, he is Davids right hand, it should be known by now that when your right hand gives you that look something is not right. James look tired, hungry and doesnt want to be there anymore, he has the right reasons that will be discover latter on.

On this episode we see Ellie scared for Joel, trying to keep him alive and sharing with him whatever food they have left, Joel has been in bed for days after he got stab but she manage to stop the bleeding and patch him up. Without the proper medicine he must have fever and be in pain, he is not young and healing could take a while so I guess for the next episodes he wont be 100% ready for what ever comes.

Ellie is hungry and knows Joel needs to eat once he wakes up so she decided to go out and hunt to bring some food but she really doesn't know how to, at first I even thought she was going to hurt herself or get shot as she falls trying to hunt a rabbit, he luck kicks in when she finds a deer and shoot him but the deer runs away. Ellie follow the tracks and blood of the deer on the snow and suddenly finds David and James who just found the dead deer Ellie shot.

As they are hungry too clearly they we going to pick it up and run away until Ellie points at them from behind and ask them to drop their weapons and leave, but David as he is clever with his words starts to talk to her and convince her they can trade medicine for food, now that I have see the episode I cant say its a bad decision from her but in a surviving environment may be she was better to just shoot both right on the spot but she was thinking about Joel, she needed the medicine for him so she agrees to trade and David sends James to town and bring it.

As they are waiting for James, David and Ellie have this conversation where he is trying to sell her a dream, go with them, he is a preacher now but from the very first moment I knew there was something wrong with this guy, by the time he ask James if he still trust him and if he still with him, nobody ask that for no reason, David was hiding something usually he is rapist, cannibal, murder, extremist you name it, its the end of the world so everything goes.

David keeps trying to convince Ellie to join them but she constantly denies until he tells her the story of how one of them died exploring a place close to them and the murder was with a girl just like Ellie, he says everything happens for a reason, at that moment Ellie knew they were in trouble, James points at Ellie from behind but David ask him to let her go, that's weird, she wants Ellie alive. Ellie gets the medicine and takes off, she dont care about the deer and run away.

Ellie runs back to Joel and dont know where to inject him so did it right on the wound, I probably would do the same, Im not a nurse. She lays down next to him waiting for Joel to wake up.

Here is where things start to fall apart for David, remember how he ask James if he still with him? well it doesnt look like since James told everyone about Ellie when he went back to pick up the medicine and now a girl whos father died tell him to kill Ellie and Joel since she thinks they kill her dad. David slap her and tells he she will always have father but in a very creepy way.

I have to say that when I saw this guy coming up with all this little chunks of meat right away I knew that was not deer, this is just me been reacting to a scene where everybody is hungry, David doesnt want to burry peoples bodies and the guy says Venison with a strange look, then all of three look at each other, something was going on.

The seen when they were all eating was creepy too, everything about this town and the people is suspicious, they eat so fast, all the plates making that noise at the same time, James having that look like he is disgust by the food but David is the only one who seems happy, the meat he is eating looks different for some reason.

David gather a few men and go after Ellie but she sees them, this is the first time we see Ellie ready to kill but she doesnt have the experience so they got her, James was about to kill Ellie when David saves her but not necessarily because he is good, the rest of his men knows there is something strange in all this and James knows the true, most likely they will bring them back to be food for the rest of the town, the horse, Ellie and Joel.

Ellie was brought to town and David starts to talk to her, trying to convince her to join them, usually this type of abusive leader wants more females around them, makes them feel powerful, but while he is talking Ellie realize where she is, its a butchery, she sees an ear on the floor so now she knows they eating people, not everybody knows this secret, tries to escape getting David close to her so she can brake his finger and tries to get the keys but she fail.

One of David's men finds Joel but he knocks him down with a rear neck choke and captures a second one too, he interrogate one of them until he gave him the location of the town, the second one tries to be brave by not saying anything, at this point Joel is full savage mode, have no time or mercy for anyone, he has a mission and thats to rescue Ellie.

Obviously when Ellie turns down David and broke his finger, he comes back with James as he seems to be the only he trust his dark secrets, they get Ellie pin down to a table and are about to kill her but she is smart and tells David she is infected because she just bite him, he freaks out and Ellie takes a butchers knife to kill James and run away.

All this happening while Joel arrive town and just discover the dead corps hanging from the roof like they are meat for sale, this is a very disturbing scene, you also got the deer and the horse laying down, an entire buffet.

After Ellie runs away she has no gun or knife, Ellie arms herself with a half burn wood and set the cabin on fire, David twisted mind cant let her go so he remains inside, he says "Im going to keep you and Im going to teach you" , she finally finds a knife and stab him but he manage to once again pin her down in the floor this time and was about to rape her, right there with the ret of the cabin on fire about to crumble down, as David was trying to put down his pants she manage to grab the butchers knife and it was a glorious 15 seconds of pure gore, savage, killing, blood and satisfaction of victory. Ellie most likely turns David head into nothing after she stab and hit him with the knife over and over again, she then gets out of the cabin and Joel finds her screaming, lucky nobody else saw them and they escape town.

I'm now getting use to The Last of Us, it doesn't bring that extensive story line like other series do but instead brings new characters and scenarios on every episode, on this episode I think we see a close deal between Ellie and Joel, they will watch and care for each other, Joel definitely will look at Ellie not just like cargo anymore but as a friend, even family after she took care of him and safe his life, mostly because she still just a child and learn how to survive, feed and defend herself. One of the best episodes of this season, I have to say Im very pleased with this season.
