Recently I had some talks with friends about fight club and the meaning of the film and this was my 5 take aways that each depends on the viewer
FIGHT CLUB' is a film with multiple meanings and equally multiple interpretations, which change depending on the ideological background of the viewer. So - although there are many more - the top five (5) interpretations for this film are as follows:
- If you are pro-violence and believe that in this life it is fair that the strongest survive, then you see this as a wild wood and action movie, which shows that people should go back to their primitive instincts, because that gives satisfaction to the animal they hide inside.
- If you are a friend-wannabe entrepreneur, then you interpret it as the success story of a guy who set up a business from scratch, made money, had employees (who worked hard for him!!!). You dream of being like him and you would beat him and your mother to achieve it!
- If you are a homemaker - a traditional family man, you are probably alienated by the satire on IKEA, because their brochures are your basic reading. What you are left with from the film is that: 'Men, even in films, secretly date their wives', which reveals your general view of the female sex.
- If you are a conspiracy theorist of any kind, things are dark... The film either steps on your narrative: 'The Earth is flat! That's why they fight so comfortably!', or you think it's propaganda from your 'enemies': 'So many men gathered in one place? It's a ploy to make us all gay! '
- If you are anti-systemic, contrarian, unconventionally romantic, then you 'see' it as a revolution against the establishment, with a parallel development of a peculiar romantic relationship between the protagonist and his boisterous partner.
