Fridays Movie Suggestion
The Sword of Doom, Kihachi Okamoto
"The Sword of Doom" is a 1966 Japanese film directed by Kihachi Okamoto. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Kaizan Nakazato and stars Tatsuya Nakadai in the lead role of Ryunosuke Tsukue
The film is set in 1860s Japan during the final years of the samurai era it narrates some "events" in the life of a Ronin Samurai who lives in the kills without a specific reason, without honor and without being based on any moral code.
The unusual thing here is that the story is abandoned right in the middle and most of the characters seem completely unrelated to the main plot, which also does not fully develop. Ironically that's what makes the film remarkable, it gives you a chance to focus on the character study of the anti-hero rather than the larger scheme behind the story and characters.
Of course it also helps that Okamoto doesn't try to copy the ideas of his colleagues. It tries in its own style, using Nakadai's eerily dispassionate performance, to evoke unfiltered cinematic awe in the viewer by telling the story of the destruction of the lives of ordinary people by a bloodthirsty killer.
The film is notable for its striking black-and-white cinematography, which creates a stark and eerie atmosphere. It is also known for its realistic and brutal sword fights, which were choreographed by legendary fight choreographer Ryutaro Nakamura. The Movie is also considered as a Classic for the Japanese cinema
Overall a great watch for the movie lovers that have nothing to do on a Friday night.
