When I read CineTv's post mentioning the Classical movies contest, I was so excited and started thinking about all of the classical movies I've seen and wondered which one I would mention. The choice was between two or three movies that came to mind and yet I opted for the first one that popped up.
The reason why I ultimately went with the musical drama film The Sound of Music - which was released in March 1965 - were the fond memories and the feelings that came with watching it. The earliest recollection I have of this story, was when I used to watch it with my father who tried to explain the plotline to us, as I was too young to understand English. That it was based on a real life story also helped in my appreciation for it.
Though I didn't know much English back then, I understood the story the moving pictures were trying to convey. I knew well enough from the acting and body language that Maria wasn't liked - or rather misunderstood - by Captain Von Trapp in the beginning, who later fell in love with all her quirks. To be honest - with my slim English vocabulary - I thought Maria and the Captain used to be married but were divorced, which prompted him to pursue Baroness Schraeder.
And Maria's welcoming response to the Baroness in the Von Trapp home was what surprised and confused me. I couldn't understand why she kept smiling and have such a loving demeanor towards the Baroness. I attributed it to Marias good nature, childlike spirit, positive outlook in life and her love for the children. Good qualities one could strive to. When I got older and had a broader vocabulary, I learned I was wrong and that Maria was "just" a nun acting as the children's governess.
Furthermore, I enjoyed the songs and the beautiful scenery in this musical and I felt the love and energy permeating through the screen. Not to mention the turn the movie took, when the Captain and Maria - spoiler alert - returned from their honeymoon. The captain was summoned to serve in the war. A war he didn't agree with, which made him decide to flee the country with his family.
Now before I'll go on and on about The Sound of Music - which is a possibility 😅 - this is where I'll bid adieu. You'll have to watch the movie yourself if you want to know more. Let me know in the comments below what your thoughts are about this classic 🤓.
