Well then… it is ABOUT DAMN TIME the Hive ecosystem got a tribe for hopeless #cinephiles like myself, a place to geek out about film philosophy, classic faves and… like, you know… whatever! (Sigh. Good feels.)
Greetings, My #CINETV Peeps!
My name is David, and I have loved watching films since I was a young child. I actually dreamed of being a professional film critic at one point-- and a screenwriter-- so you can say I was made for this tribe… it’s destiny, I suppose.
Do you need proof of my childhood aspirations? Probably not, but I’m going to provide it anyway… mostly because I still get a kick out of the seriousness with which I approached these things.
Exhibit A: The Post-It Reviews
These are just two examples in a bunch of #movies that still bear my original handwritten reviews (and star ratings) from twenty years ago. Clearly, I used the most conveniently-sized paper that was within arm’s reach at the time and just taped them to the front covers… but the film reviews were as apt and earnest as I could muster.
I laugh now, as I said, at how serious I was about my observations and opinions. Kids! (I was an older teen and young adult when I was writing these, admittedly, but I still don’t quite feel like an adult… and I’m in my thirties!)
That’s a whole other ball of wax though…
One of reviews pictured above is for the film called “Cool Hand Luke” starring Paul Newman, still in my top 3 movies of all time. If you haven’t yet seen it, don’t hesitate to SOAK IT IN at some point. Here is what my younger self wrote:
”I could never say enough about this movie. It is absolutely, indubitably spectacular. This is Paul Newman’s finest hour, by far. Luke is the best character I’ve ever come across, and there’s no better actor to portray “Cool Hand”. I love it! The best acting you’ll come across.”
Not the most artful or resourceful use of words, now that I’m seeing it for the first time in a while… but it is what it is, and it is an important part of my development as a creative misfit. I’m okay with it.
And my opinion hasn’t changed one iota: Paul Newman is a true actor, and this really is some of his finest work. Check out anything of his-- THE HUSTLER is another masterpiece that pops into my mind, which co-stars Jackie Gleason-- and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Don’t Be a #Movie Snob!
People tend to shy away from older films… just because they’re old. It’s the strangest thing, and I’ve noticed this quirk in both kids and adults. Anything black-and-white can’t be good, right?
Only the latter of the two films I mention in this post is actually black-and-white, but I’m just making a point… there’s a whole world of wonderful #films that people are missing because of their own bias blinders. Old films can be great too!
So get in there and devour as much top-notch #cinema as humanly possibly… even if we can’t all meet at the actual cinema (bullshit). Then come back here and tell us about all of it! And don’t forget to stake your #CINE tokens so your curation efforts can help spread the love and get the tribe snowball rolling.
