I very much liked the description of the role of Ethan Hawke. His acting indeed gave the film its fear element. Such a chilling, nostalgic touch was present in the 70s setting. Another aspect that I concur with is that the horror was not exaggerated by the relatively simple nature of the film. Passive destruction of the psychological, as well as the supernatural, aspect of The Black Phone!
