Education As Investment
Hi. In this post I would like to talk about how education can be viewed as investment.
Education As Transfer Of Information
I view education as a transfer of information from the educator to the students. This transfer of information is not just limited to schools and learning institutions. Transfer of information can happen anywhere. Examples include:
- Talking with friends and family
- Youtube
- Here on Hive.Blog
- Martial art schools and gyms
- Travelling
I think there is a large association of the word learning with school. Learning can happen anywhere and at any time. It does not have to formal like in a classroom setting.
This is sort of a side note but I am aware of some people who do not like school. It could be the subjects are not interesting to them, the teacher(s) or school could be bad, the work is too demanding, the classroom environment is not for them and/or the student could be lazy/unmotivated. Whatever the reason the transfer of information to these students does not really happen in the school environment. Maybe they benefit in other forms of learning outside the classroom.
Education As Investment
I work currently in the private sector in educational services. Instead of receiving funding from government, private sector education workers work hard to attract paying customers as well as retain them for wages, benefits and profits. Private sector provide goods and services at a certain price and if the customers agree to the prices, terms and conditions then the exchange of money for service happens.
Education is an in demand sector and will remain this way. There are always people especially youths who are growing and learning to become productive members of society and economies. From the student side education develops knowledge, skills and experience to be ready for the workplace and for certain industries. Youths do also learn some self defense and safety skills to protect themselves from dangerous people. There are utility elements in learning certain topics at school and outside of school.
My owner boss once mentioned this while conversing with us colleagues at a dinner social. She has quite a strategic business mind. My owner did ask the question of why invest in the stock market when you can invest in education? Invest in education in this context meant invest a good of money into an education franchise. That was my guess. Over the last few years our centres with this franchise has grown a lot with the help of marketing expenses, improved operations and increased staffing. My boss saw a better (and maybe safer) return on investment on education franchise centres versus the financial markets.
Investing Into Child's Development
Kids have a lot of time available compared to their adult counterparts. For the child this abundance of free time can be taken advantage of with enrollment in hobbies, extra learning outside of school and good parenting. Time that is not used cannot be taken back.
Some parents and households are really proactive with helping their kids in their educational goals as well as career goals. Money spent for the child's hobbies and after school learning is like planting the seeds of growth as well as watering the plants of growth. When parents spend money for their kids they expect learning and accelerated growth for their kids. Instead of teaching their kids math at home they would rather pay specialists for after school math development. Money spent on helping their kids grow and learn is money well spent and invested.
