Hi everyone. In this short education post I talk about student injuries. This post is based from my workplace in educational services where one student had a skiing accident and had to transfer from in-person learning to online learning after-school.
Student Injuries From Accidents
Most students have activities and hobbies that they participate in after school. These activities could be after school art classes, martial art classes, sports, video games and so on. Some of these activities may be low risk in terms of physical safety and some other activities could be physically dangerous.
The students that play in sports do have to be careful with their bodies. A big injury could really limit someone physically and mentally. Someone with a hurt right hand which is their writing hand may not be able to take hand written notes with their other non-dominant hand. An injury that limits a person's mobility in walking and running would have that student attend online classes instead of in-person classes.
Injuries do not have to be sports related. Unfortunately injuries can occur from fights in social gatherings, fights on the streets and/or vehicle accidents. A student that is dealing with an injury may not be able to learn compared to normal and may need an alternate way of learning.
Accomodations For Students
I once took a short course about accommodating for disabled and special needs students. If I recall correctly, one of the big takeaways from the short course was to not assume but ask the individual(s) if they need assistance or they need a different setup that suits their situation.
If someone is not able to do hand written notes, a digital touchscreen tablet with .pdf notes could be provided. A wheelchair user could be positioned at the front of the class instead of having the individual in the middle of the classroom where it is crowded. Instead of in-person learning the student could transition to online learning.
In an online learning environment accommodations can be made to even regular students. A young student around grades 1 to 4 (age 5 to 8) is likely not able to use a mouse and keyboard very well or fast. An online tutor could ask questions verbally and the student(s) could answer back verbally. The tutor could type or draw their answers for them. It is slightly more time efficient in this way.
In the private education sector education providers are indeed in business to make money. There is also the community aspect when it comes to educational services. It is also helping out those in the local area with their learning and development.
