Examination is a method of judging the performance of pupils or students after completion of teaching and learning experience in the school system. The purpose of examination in all schools is to assess students' performance in education. This is a way of evaluating their cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
A school without an examination is nothing but a wasted effort on the child's development. (Princessbusayo)
Examination has been done in different ways across the global world. The way examination is conducted in the Primary school is different from Secondary likewise not as in the Tertiary institution. The system of Examination is so different in Nigeria, I don't know about other countries but I am here to talk about the way it is done in my country.
The success of examination in Primary school will determine whether the child will be promoted or not, so also in secondary school. Without getting the required grades in school, you will repeat a class and that is it. But in the Tertiary institution, you move to the next level not considering your grade but there is one thing about this. In the first and second year in the Institution, if you do not meet up with the CGPA of the sessions, you will be advised to withdraw and that's it. You forfeit your stay in the University.
When we talk about Examination in Tertiary institution, Nigeria has ruined all because of money. The lecturers are bribed by the student just to pass a course and move to the next level. Thereby discarding the efforts of those who had studied hard for such moment. Let's take for instance
As at last year, we sat for a course which was so difficult for everyone in the examination hall. The Covid-19 spoilt everything that there wasn't any online lecture to continue. Immediately we resume back to school, we started the exam. If not for God, I would have failed the course, this means I am carrying over the course next session. What amazed me was when the result came out, we were told some students went behind to bribe the lecturers in charge and they scored A. Out of 300 students who took the course, 5 students scored A leaving the remaining to get D and E. That was so poor result.
Nigeria has turned school system into business where those who really studied hard are not getting what they should get while those who paid passed. Should it be so? How do we measure students performance? This shouldn't be so because students aren't trained to develop on their own in the world of work.
Nigeria system should see to this habit and reconstruct the system to suit all students. Let all students get what they deserved as this will make them adjust and study hard for what is coming ahead of them.
