Common Confusions with Gustar-Type Verbs + Infinitives
Many Spanish learners struggle with verbs like gustar, encantar, and fascinar when they’re followed by another verb. Here’s a quick guide to avoid common mistakes.
✅ Key Rule:
Once you have a conjugated verb, any following verb should be in the infinitive form—not conjugated.
🧠 Structure & Pronouns:
Verbs like gustar, encantar, and fascinar require an indirect object pronoun to indicate who is experiencing the feeling:
- Me (for “I”)
- Te (for “you” – informal)
- Le (for “he,” “she,” or “you” – formal)
Additionally, the form of gustar (or encantar, fascinar, etc.) agrees with the subject that follows—not with the person who likes it.
- Me gusta el libro. (el libro = singular)
- Me gustan los libros. (los libros = plural)
📌 When Followed by a Verb:
When expressing an activity, these verbs are always followed by an infinitive, and the verb (gusta, encanta, fascina) remains singular—regardless of the activity:
- Me gusta jugar al fútbol.
- Le encanta viajar.
- Te fascina bailar salsa.
💡 Tip: You never say “Me gustan jugar…”—the infinitive is treated as a singular concept.
📝 Real Example from Class:
The following error was observed during practice with Year 12 and 13 students (though similar mistakes appear in other year groups too). Therefore it is a good for IB-Spanish Tip:
❌ “Me encanta visité la India.”
From the context—answering the question “¿A dónde fuiste el verano pasado?”—the correct versions would be:
If describing a past experience:
✅ “El verano pasado visité la India.”If expressing a general preference:
✅ “Me encanta visitar la India.”
🔁 To combine both ideas, you’d need two separate sentences:
Me encanta visitar la India. El verano pasado, visité la India.
More elaborate:
Me encanta visitar la India. El verano pasado la visité.
