Hello teachers, students, and researchers, I am here again today, Wednesday, 3rd April, 2020, to share a guide on how to measure teachers’ participation in maintenance of school discipline through research.
School plays an important role in the socialization process of the young people. Children learn to regulate their own conduct, show respect towards others, manage their time responsibly and thus becoming responsible citizens mainly as a result of what they learn in school.
The roles of teachers in the school system are enormous and varied. The teacher stands out as one of the most important factors determining the quality of education and its contributions to national development.
There are escalating cases of bullying, arson cases in schools, vandalism of school properties, general refusal to follow school rules and regulations as well as increasing alcoholism.
There are reports of a wide range of potentially disruptive behaviours in the classrooms and in the schools. Many students are usually seen loitering in streets in towns, villages and in cinema halls and in other places in their uniforms and during class hours.
Personal observations by the researcher has reveals that attempts by teachers to effect disciplinary measures have met with reported cases of rebellion especially where female teachers are involved and it gives an illusion that the students positive response to discipline depends on the gender of the teacher administrating the discipline. This may discourage some teachers to shy away from participation in school discipline maintenance in a way to avoid possible harassment afterwards.
Such uncomely attitude of some of the teachers neglecting school discipline has been linked to their personal characteristics and the development is of grave concern for educational stakeholders. The prevalence of societal vices in schools also poses managerial and administrative challenges for school principals. This forms the thrust for this study to empirically investigate to what level teachers’ participation in maintenance of school discipline could help to curb indiscipline in schools. For the purpose of this write, teachers’ participation in maintenance of school discipline is conceptualized as:
- Interest in school discipline
- Participation in formulation of School rules and regulations
I have put in over seven years into educational researches, and I have discovered that it is a popular problem among research students to be able to construct their instruments for collection of data even when this is a major component for the success of the research. In the coming days, I would be sharing more research guides and tips for students and teachers. This is my way of supporting the @Steemiteducation and the #Education-Hive community.
I decided to put below the following guide question for a researcher who is interested in working on a topic related to "teachers’ participation in maintenance of school discipline".
Questionnaire Items to measure Teachers’ Participation in maintenance of school discipline
Variable 1: Interest in school discipline
| S/N | Statement | Agreed | Disagreed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Routine lateness to school should be investigated. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 2 | Students who do not habitually dress well should be cautioned. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 3 | Students should not be saucy no matter the level of provocation. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 4 | Students should possess high moral values and character. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 5 | Students’ misbehaviour should not punished before correction. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 6 | Students who bully others should be severely punished. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 7 | Students should coexist peacefully irrespective of variation in background. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 8 | The school should be conflict free. | Agreed | Disagreed |
Variable 2: Participation in formulation of School rules and regulations
| S/N | Statement | Agreed | Disagreed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | All teachers regularly send inputs for school policy developments. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 10 | Teachers regularly give suggestions for formulation of school rules/regulations. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 11 | Teachers’ comments are always esteemed for school policy amendment. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 12 | Teachers’ contributions to yearly amendment of school rules/regulations are often valued. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 13 | Teachers are rarely absent from meetings for ratification of school rules/regulations. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 14 | Teachers normally read through school rules/regulations. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 15 | Teachers have suggested that provision be made for disabled students in school rules/regulation. | Agreed | Disagreed |
| 16 | Teachers protest against corporal punishments on students. | Agreed | Disagreed |
