Good morning and Good evening to all the Teachers and Parents out there depending on your time line.
Today is Saturday 2nd May, 2020 and I'm pleased to welcome you all to my blog and to the class. Please come right in and let's have a bit of fun and learn in the process too.
These few days, I have been trying my best to reveal some hidden challenges that I faced in the school where I serve as the Head Teacher and the strategy which I adopted to tackle such challenges. As a matter of fact or for proper understanding of today's lesson, you can please look up my previous posts to get a previous knowledge about today's lesson which still centers on the major theme: Factors influencing learning output among the young learners.
Background information
Today's background information would rather be in a question form.
- Did/Do you know that teacher's dress code can become a noise and distraction to the teaching learning process?
- Did/Do you know that you are address based on how you dress?
- Did/Do you know that your pupils or learners see you first before they hear you?
You may want to talk a little time to reflect on the third question which of course the inspiration behind this post.
You see, the truth is that in my little years of experience in the Classroom, I have observe, and thus from my observation could conclude that most time, we as Teachers seem to pay attention to the content of our lesson plan, note of lesson, the scheme of work, curriculum and syllabus etc., yet fail to pay attention to other minute information like the psychological state of mind of the pupils, the individual difference of our learners, the classroom setting and sitting arrangement.
I imagine you saying that you do consider such factors, well, if you did/do, I want to appreciate you for doing so.
But have you ever have a cause to think about your learners when considering your choice of dress code for the day? "Awwwwwwwwn, I never thought of that", and or is there any cause to do so?"
So what is Dress Code
Since, I'm interacting with teachers, I guess that there be no need to get a dictionary definition of the term "DRESS CODE". However, I will take it from a lay man's point of view. Dress is a material that is worn to cover the body or to identify us. Take not of the word identify or "IDENTIFY". Code on the other side is like a kind of rules or hidden/encrypted thing (like door) that could only be unlocked by one with password.
What has dress code got to do with teaching profession?
Dear, it has to do a lot with teaching because I would not imagine you walking to the class naked. hahahahahahaha, well, that's on a lighter note. But the truth of course remains that, as a teacher, you ought to know that Teaching like every other profession has it's ethics of which the dress code is one of them.
Now let me ask, how would you tell the difference between a Policeman and Lawyer if not by their DRESSING which makes it quite easy to spot the difference. We can say same about Engineers and Doctors but I doubt saying same about Teachers.
Perhaps, it is from this stolen identity that teachers do not have a particular dress code as they are at liberty to wearing anything to class. Believe me when I say anything, I have for more than 15 years of my experience in the classroom seen things that shouldn't be called clothes, yet teachers (ignorantly or deliberately) wore it to class.
Here's what DRESS CODE does to learning output
I would want to bore you with too much explanation as this post is already kinda too long. So I'll highlight them thus:
- Over dressing to class makes the learners shift their attention from the lesson content to you BODY CONTENT.
- Wrong dressing like wearing high hills makes the teacher make noise on every step she takes in the class from the thud of the shoes.
- Wearing short skirts or dress would make you feel uncomfortable squatting or bending to write on the board as all the eyes of the learners would be fixed at you.
- Wearing the wrong dress code does not allow the class to be interactive as some of the learners would be lost in silly thoughts about you and thus forget everything that is happening in the class.
Believe me, I could go on and on but time would not permit me, I hope that you could learn few other lessons from the original memes I used here.
For avoidance of a mix-up and or misunderstanding, I would list the following to be a Teachers' DRESS CODE that causes distraction in school or class.
a. Wearing Long Hills
b. Short Skirt
c. Over tighten trouser or skirt
d. Sagging of trouser or skirt - this one is uncalled for.
e. Shirts with flowers or images or inscription on it.
f. Wearing a tighten top that exposes your sensual organs.
Feel free to add yours too in the comment box and I'll be glad learning from you too.
Thank you for daring to read to the end, I hope that you had a lesson or two to learn from this.
Please note that the pictures used in the post are pupils and teachers in the school where I serve as Head Teacher. It was captured with my camera without their knowledge. So observe them closely, there are some hidden lessons from it.
Yes, we have our own dress code for teachers in the school I serve as Head Teacher.
