Randall James Hamilton Zwinge, was a great guy. But he was not publicly known by the name on his ID card, but by a simpler and easier to remember version "James Randi". He was born in Canada in the late 1920s but spent most of his career in the United States. There he was a professional illusionist, escapologist and advertising image consultant. So James experienced firsthand the decadence of an American society that was increasingly influenced by what it saw on television. To the point of believing in people who "bent" spoons of "steel" with their minds; people who supposedly claimed to cure all kinds of illnesses (yes, including cancer) and in his later years he (James Randi) made, in my view, his best contribution to humanity: unmasking con men, liars and manipulators.

Nació en Canadá, a finales de la década de los 20's pero se desarrolló durante casi toda su carrera en los Estados Unidos. Allí fue ilusionista profesional, escapista y asesor de imagen publicitaria. De modo que James, supo experimentar en carne propia la decadencia de una sociedad norteamericana que cada vez se veía más y más influenciada por lo que veía en la televisión. Al punto de creer en sujetos que "doblaban" cucharas de "acero" con la mente; personas que supuestamente afirmaban curar todo tipo de enfermedades (sí, incluyendo el cáncer) y en sus últimos años hizo, (James Randi) desde mi punto de vista, su mejor aporte a la humanidad: desenmascarar a estafadores, mentirosos y manipuladores.
This is the story of a guy who, unfortunately, is not as well known as he should be. We all have notions of Kris Angel, Houdini, or David Blaine, but no one was bigger and smarter than James Randi. Moreover, if there is one thing that this guy has done throughout his career, it is to go against those who have systematically taken advantage of those gullible, desperate or lonely people who choose to believe that by touching an image they see on television, with the hand of a pseudo-minister-pastor-reverend, they will be "cured" of all the ills that afflict them. To understand this, it is fundamental to be able to dimension the greatness of Mr. Randi's lifelong and tireless work.
Now, one of the most momentous milestones in James Randi's history was to have exposed one of the worst tricksters, liars and phonies in the cultural history of the United States of America. And yes, I am referring to the very famous Uri Geller. A self-proclaimed "mentalist", "psychic" and "chosen by God", who according to him; while he was a 4 year old boy, playing outside, he came across a sudden "ray of incandescent light" that hit him and from that moment on he began to have "mental powers". Which he never solved for any benefit to mankind, but decided to put to better use: bending steel spoons and guessing which containers were full and which were not.

Todos tenemos noción de Kris Angel, Houdini, o David Blaine, pero nadie fue más grande y más inteligente que James Randi. Además, si hay algo que este sujeto ha hecho durante toda su trayectoria es ir en contra de aquellos que sistemáticamente se han dedicado a coger ventajas de aquellos crédulos, desesperados o solitarios, deciden creer que con tocar una imagen que ven en la televisión, con la mano de un pseudo-ministro-pastor-reverendo, serían "curados" de todos los males que los afligen. Entender esto, es fundamental para poder dimensionar la grandeza del trabajo sin descanso que hizo durante toda su vida, el Sr. Randi.
Ahora bien, uno de los hitos más trascendentales de la historia de James Randi fue haber expuesto a uno de los peores embaucadores, mentirosos y farsantes de la historia cultural de los Estados Unidos de América. Y sí, me refiero al famosísimo Uri Geller. Un autoproclamado "mentalista", "psiquico" y "elegido por Dios", que según él; mientra era un niño de 4 años, jugando afuera se topó con un repentino "rayo de luz incandescente" que lo golpeó y desde aquél momento empezó a tener "poderes mentales". Mismos, que jamás resolvió para ninguna beneficio para la humanidad, sino que decidió darle mejor uso: doblar cucharas de acero y adivinar cuáles contenedores estaban llenos y cuáles no.
None of this would be wrong, were it not for the fact that Geller did these performances on national television, where he quickly became astronomically famous. Almost overnight he went from absolute anonymity to a kind of New Age celebrity. And this last element is absolutely key. Recall that in the late 1960s, and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, New Age, pop culture and mass television consumption completely took over every American household. In this historical context, Geller saw a golden opportunity to fool millions of people who gullibly believed (and you can verify this, if you want) that he was someone out of the ordinary. "Unique', they called him.
Nada de esto estaría mal, si no fuese porque Geller hacía estos performances en televisión nacional, donde rápidamente se volvió astronómicamente famoso. Casi que de la noche a la mañana pasó del más absoluto anonimato a ser una especie de celebridad de la Nueva Era. Y este último elemento es completamente clave. Recordemos que a finales de los 60's, y durante toda la década de los 70's y 80's lo "New Age", la cultura Pop y el consumo masivo de televisión se apoderó por completo de todos los hogares estadounidenses. Bajo este contexto histórico, Geller vio una oportunidad de oro para engañar a mansalva a millones de personas que de un modo completamente crédulo creían (y pueden verificarlo, si quieren) que él era alguien fuera de lo normal. "Único", le llamaban.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, James Randi has repeatedly taken it upon himself to show (without ever revealing how the tricks that made Uri Geller famous were performed) that everything seen coming from the "One and Only" were nothing more than optical illusions, talent, discipline and deception. Remember, Randi himself began his career as a professional illusionist and escape artist. Indeed, Houdini will always be renowned for his escapology tricks, but Randi was not only better than Houdini, he beat him at tricks; setting records.... But I digress. James, on the Johnny Carson show, took it upon himself to give precise directions to the production crew where he suggested that they not let Geller use his own spoons...
In this regard, he also instructed the production team to fix the liquid-filled cylinders to a table. That they could use some kind of reinforcement but never glue. What ended up happening? For more than an hour, on national television, live and direct, Uri Geller was suddenly unable to perform his "Riddles". He excused himself, and said he felt extremely tired and under pressure. He was not comfortable. Geller evidently sued him, but Randi counter-sued him, and nothing proceeded. It simply seemed that out of nowhere, the "One and Only" was no longer so "special". Some people place James as a person who was "envious" of those who were famous. But this is absolutely false.

James, en el show de Johnny Carson, se encargó de darle indicaciones precisas al equipo de producción donde sugería que no dejaran que Geller usara sus propias cucharas...
En este sentido, también les indicó al equipo de producción que fijarán los cilindros llenos de líquido a una mesa. Que podían emplear algún tipo de reforzamiento pero jamás pegamento ¿Qué terminó sucediendo? Durante más de una hora, en televisión nacional, en vivo y directo, de repente Uri Geller no pudo realizar sus "Adivinanzas". Se excusó, y dijo que se sentía sumamente cansado y presionado. Que no estaba cómodo. Geller, evidentemente lo demandó, pero Randi lo contrademandó, y nada procedió. Sencillamente, parecía que de la nada, el "Único" había dejado de ser tan "especial". Algunas personas ubican a James, como una persona que sentía "envidia" de aquellas que eran famosas. Pero esto es absolutamente falso.
Randi's motivation was always to be in fierce opposition to con artists, because he saw in them a potential danger that could have horrendous consequences. So he devoted much of his life to exposing the sham of these guys. The case of Uri Geller VS James Randi is memorable and has multiple books, YouTube videos and even lectures about it. But it was by no means the only case. The televangelists by trade were also mocked, exposed and denounced by Randi. In Florida, Randi hired an actor who posed as "surveillance personnel" for an evangelical pastor who boasted that he could guess the exact illness of his parishioners and claimed that he had the "Power of God to heal".
Of course, he first asked those who attended for 10 per cent of their total monthly earnings. You know, God is everywhere, but somehow, he always seems to need money.... The actor Randi hired had a transistor that picked up radio waves. What was the discovery? Well, the "evangelical pastor's" wife, while he was at his daily rallies, literally recited the names of the parishioners he had to approach. With the exact address of their homes, type of illness, and even their exact first and last names.... Quite a system for deception, don't you think? When Randi exposed this, the little pastor's church went to the dogs.... But, oh, surprise! It appeared years later, renamed everything and now charges to heal you from COVID-19, and you can even pay by PayPal...
La motivación de Randi siempre fue estar en férrea oposición ante los estafadores ¿la razón? Veía en estos sujetos un peligro potencial que podría traer consecuencias horrendas. De modo, que dedicó gran parte de su vida a exponer la farsa de estos sujetos. El caso de Uri Geller VS James Randi es memorable y tiene múltiples libros, vídeos en YouTube y hasta conferencias al respecto. Pero de ninguna manera fue el único caso. Los telepredicadores de oficio también fueron objeto de burla, exposición y denuncia por parte de Randi. Eso sí, primero les pedía a quienes asistían el 10 por ciento de sus ganancias totales mensuales. Ya sabes, Dios está en todas partes pero de algún modo, siempre parece necesitar dinero... El actor que contrató Randi, tenía consigo un transistor que captaba ondas de radio ¿Cuál fue el descubrimiento? Pues, que la esposa del "pastor evangélico" mientras este estaba en sus mítines diarios, literalmente le recitaba el nombre de aquellos feligreses a los que tenía que acercarse. Con dirección exacta de sus domicilios, tipo de enfermedad; e incluso el nombre y apellidos exactos... Todo un sistema para el engaño, ¿no creen? Cuando Randi expuso esto, la Iglesia del pastorcito se vino a pique... Pero, ¡oh, sorpresa! Apareció años después, rebautizado todo y actualmente cobra por sanarte del COVID-19, y puedes pagar hasta por PayPal...
Among many of the things that James Randi has bequeathed to humanity is undoubtedly the promulgation of scepticism as a protective measure against the billions of phonies everywhere. The scientific method and above all, the constant struggle against pseudoscience. This is the case we can see in a famous TED TALKS conference where Randi swallows a whole bottle of homeopathic pills, and simply nothing happens to him. Or, when he launched the most famous quiz I have ever read or seen. It consisted of giving a million dollars to anyone who, through verifiable methodology, could prove the existence of the paranormal. Thousands of candidates entered the contest, no one could ever prove anything.
James Randi was a memorable fellow. He was always in favour of culture, the development of intelligence, the method of investigation and doubt. He never took it upon himself to expose any illusionist, magician, or entertainer. His problem was precisely with those who sought to take advantage of the faith and the physical or psychological needs of others. He saw in manipulation, lies and farce something repudiatory and dangerous. He was dedicated to fighting it all his life, and honestly deserved to be much more widely publicised than he was. An exceptional subject, without equal and with a deep conviction in what the society of his time needed: critical thinking, empathy and above all, the greatest of scepticism towards what we consume. A genius, absolutely.
Entre muchas de las cosas que ha legado James Randi para la humanidad, indiscutiblemente está la promulgación del escepticismo como medida protectora ante miles de millones de farsantes que hay en todos lados. El método científico y sobre todo, la lucha constante ante las pseudociencias. Este es el caso que podemos ver en una famosa conferencia de "TED TALKS" donde Randi ingiere un frasco entero de pastillas homeopáticas, y sencillamente no le sucede nada. O, cuando lanzó el concurso más famoso que jamás haya leído o visto. Constaba de dar un millón de dólares a quien, mediante metodología comprobable, pudiera demostrar la existencia de los paranormal. Miles de candidatos se inscribieron en el concurso, nadie jamás pudo demostrar nada.
James Randi, fue un sujeto memorable. Siempre estuvo a favor de la cultura, el desarrollo de la inteligencia, el método de investigación y la duda. Jamás se encargó de exponer a ningún ilusionista, mago, o artista. Su problema lo tenía, justamente, con aquellos que pretendían aprovecharse de la fe y las necesidades físicas o psicológicas de los demás. Veía en la manipulación, la mentira y la farsa algo repudiable y peligroso. Se dedicó a combatirlo toda su vida, y honestamente merecería ser mucho más divulgado de lo que fue. Un sujeto excepcional, sin igual y con una profunda convicción en lo que la sociedad de su época necesitaba: pensamiento crítico, empatía y sobre todo, el más grande de los escepticismos ante lo que consumimos. Un genio, totalmente.
