Living in the countryside, surrounded by farmland and farmers, I deeply empathize with what could happen if foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) ever reaches the UK.

If it spreads, it won’t just be farm animals at risk—many of the most beautiful wild animals could be affected.
and even our pets.
Many animals might have to be culled or quarantined to prevent the disease from spreading. Farmers would struggle, and we’d all feel the impact, especially on our food supply.
The 2001 outbreak was devastating—millions of animals were killed, farms shut down, and the countryside was filled with burning carcasses. Farmers don’t want to relive that nightmare.
Germany's first Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak in 40 years was found in a water buffalo herd near Berlin in January. Authorities banned animal transport and closed Berlin’s zoos. Tests later found no other cases. In response, Morocco halted German feed grain imports, and Australia tightened biosecurity on imports. The UK faced criticism for delaying meat import restrictions, but MPs are now pushing for tighter border checks.
Farmers were advised to Protect Their Herds:
Control who and what comes onto the farm.
Keep new animals separate before mixing them with others.
Report any signs of FMD immediately.
The UK is still free of FMD, but the fear is real. Farmers, animals, and even those living in rural areas could all suffer if history repeats itself.
