The little country of Kosovo, which proclaimed independence in 2008 but is still not recognized as such by half of the UN member states as well as by Serbian institutions, mobilized certain units of the Serbian army close to the border with Kosovo. After the Kosovar Albanian police battled with the country's Serb minority while attempting to impose mayors of Albanian descent on them, there was yet another worry.
It took place in the northern Kosovo towns of North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic, and Zubin Potok: the Kosovar police, who actually had an almost entirely Albanian component, had clashed with protesters who belonged to the Serb ethnic population, which is a minority in the nation but the majority in that town. Following the installation of the new mayors in four communities with a majority of Serbian residents, the populace erupted in outrage. The Kosovar government refused to give Serbs more autonomy as was also intended by an agreement on relations between Serbia and Kosovo that the two countries had reached in March with the mediation of the European Union, so before the elections, citizens of Serb ethnicity boycotted the elections by refusing to cast their ballots.
Despite a turnout of less than 4%, ethnic Albanians were elected mayors as a result of the Serb population's boycott.
When Kosovo police intervened to transport elected mayors to town halls, demonstrators were attacked with violence. Over 12 individuals were hurt, there were explosions, firearms were fired, and the police used tear gas. The relocation of Serbian troops close to the Kosovo border, according to Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic, was ordered by President Vucic because it is obvious that there has been a terrorist attack against the Serbian community. France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed their condemnation of the Kosovar police's use of violence in a joint statement, expressed concern over the Serbian effort, and urged Kosovo to put an end to the conflict. The greatest protests throughout history have largely been rituals with little practical impact on the policies and aspirations of those who seek conflict. Well-known figures at the top of the little struggling state were among the clash's instigators.
Additionally, patrols of the taxing and ineffective Eulex expedition were ambushed. Washington's criticism of the Kosovo government was twitted by Blinken.
The remaining ethnic Serbs in Kosovo, a former Serbian region in former Yugoslavia, make up 5% of the nation's 1.8 million inhabitants. In the region of the nation that is populated primarily by Serbs, Kosovska Mitrovica's northern region and some of the major historical Serbian settlement centers were frequently the locations of the first Slavic Christianization about a thousand years ago.
In reality, contested ethnic enclaves are merely requesting more autonomy in areas like education, healthcare, and economic development.
