The Turkish government is unhappy with the United Nations. The government leader Erdogan stated that the organization is focused too much on the desires of the 5 permanent "Security Council" members. As they all carry a veto, if one of the 5 doesn't agree with something, they essentially cause the organization to stop functioning.
Erdogan stated: "A new global security architecture, which will protect peace as opposed to the status quo, which will serve all of humanity instead of the interests of the five countries (on the Security Council), must be established."
Pointing to the importance of Turkiye’s Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Erdogan then said: "I believe the message of peace, dialogue and solidarity we have sent from Antalya at a difficult time when all of humanity is struggling with a hard crisis has given a very distinctive meaning to the forum. The fact that the first high-level contact between Russia and Ukraine took place here yesterday shows that the Antalya Diplomacy Forum has begun to achieve its goal."
The foreign ministers of Turkiye, Ukraine, and Russia met last Thursday to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, which had just entered its third week. The high-level tripartite meeting in the Turkish resort city lasted for more than an hour. "We hope restrain and common sense will prevail and the weapons will fall silent as soon as possible," Erdogan added.
Ukraine crisis reveals major UN Security Council problems.
So now the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the situation in Ukraine has revealed major problems within the United Nations (UN) Security Council. He noted: "If the world had objected to the occupation of Ukraine in 2014, would we be facing the current outlook? Those who were silent on Crimea in 2014 now speak up, is justice valid only for a part of the world?" referring to Moscow's unilateral annexation of Crimea.
Erdogan renewed his criticism of the UN Security Council's dispute resolution mechanism, in which the five permanent members of the UN Security Council decide the fate of the 193 member states of the organisation, which he considers unfair. He stressed that the problem with the Security Council lies in the voting system: "When one of the conflicting parties becomes a permanent member and has the right of veto, the binding role of the UN Security Council is disrupted."
Erdogan also described the behaviour of Western countries towards Russian writers, especially novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, as similar to the conduct of the Mongols led by Hulagu when they burned books in Baghdad. Erdogan noted that while he supports the struggle of the Ukrainian people: "Racism towards citizens of Russian origin cannot be accepted."
