One of the most common arguments against true democracy is that it's slow. To understand this, take a look at its opposite; a dictatorship. A dictator can make decisions on his own, so social changes can be realized quickly, with a strike of his pen. That's not what we want though; we want slow decisions.

In fact, democracy is society's ultimate decentralization; instead of power concentrated in the hands of one individual or a small group, power is decentralized and spread across every able citizen. One man, one vote. Democracy is based on the very simple idea that if you have to live with the consequences of a decision, you're entitled to have a say, a vote in that decision. Now, we have decided that it's impossible, that decision-making would almost grind to a complete halt if everyone would have a say in every decision. Therefore we delegate our vote, usually every four years, to a team of experts which we call politicians. They in turn have an extensive team of advisory institutions, called departments, filled with experts in one particular field. Representative democracy is what we call that, and it's how most "free" countries are organized.
This democratic experiment has failed us however. You see, democracy is built on top of the way we've organized our economy; and the economy is where power is really distributed. Everything in our "free" societies is centered around private property and the protection of that property. To have private property is to have power. It's that simple. If I own a piece of land, I have the power to keep you of it, and if you trespass, I have the government's monopoly on the use of violence behind my back. This is the sole function of every government in existence: to protect my private property. And yours, and Elon Musk's. Within the realm of my private property decisions are made with the speed of light. If I want you out of my house, it's a couple of meters to the door. But that's where my absolute power ends. Now consider the scope of Elon Musk's power.
This is what most people do not understand about capitalism; it's a system that creates dictators. If Musk and other Tech-CEOs want something done, they find the government eager to be at their service. Just look at it in the most simplistic way possible: of the government's primary function is the protection of private property, doesn't it follow that those with the largest amount of private property enjoy most of that protection? Why do you think governments and the police have historically been busting unions? Democracy has no chance in a world where everything is aimed at the concentration of wealth and property into the hands of a few.
Beyond representative democracy there's anarchy. Anarchism pushes for a society without class, unjust hierarchies, coercion, oppression, a society of equal brothers and sisters, a society of friends who are all voluntarily dedicated to the well being of the community. If this sounds Utopian, I can understand. We've all been raised in societies where we all live behind a wall of all against all. That's capitalism, the idea that progression is linked to competition, instead of the truth, which is that all progression has come about through cooperation. We can do and achieve anything if we're united behind a common goal. How else do you think the great Cathedrals or Pyramids were built? Competition and markets can only lead to the severely chaotic and unjust world we have now.
As slow as we re now to make real progression against climate change, we would have come much further if we'd gone with the slow option of true democracy and true freedom. That's what I sincerely believe. If every decision was made through the agonizingly slow method of one-man-one-vote, we'd not have half the problems we have now. If Musk and his billionaire peers would have never been allowed to accumulate so much power, wages would be fair, and corporations would have been owned by the workers. True anarchy means no capitalism. Anarcho-capitalism is a contradiction in terms, and capitalism is antithetical to democracy and freedom. Watch the below linked video for a short introduction to what anarchism is.
