The Heart Sutra talks about five skandhas or the Five Aggregates, these are the five elements that make up our experience of the self and the world.

- The first skandha is Form (Rupa), which is physical matter, the body and the sense organs.
- The second skandha is Sensation (Vedana), which is our experience of pleasure, pain, or indifference.
- The third skandha is Perception (Samjña), which is the recognition of objects, memories and conceptualization of them.
- The fourth skandha is Mental formations (Samskara), which are the complex mental and emotional states like thoughts, emotions, beliefs, habits, and intentions.
- The fifth skandha is Consciousness (Vijnana), which is the faculty of awareness that reflects and interprets the experiences provided by the other four skandhas.
The Heart Sutra teaches that all of these five skandhas, as well as all things in the world, are empty of inherent existence. They are dependent on one another and they arise in dependence upon the conditions that create them.
It means that nothing has an independent essence and that everything exists in a state of interdependence. This understanding leads to the end of suffering and the attainment of liberation and enlightenment.
This sutra, also known as "Pañcaskandhaka Sutra" examines the five aggregates that make up the basis of our psychological life: body, feelings, perceptions, mental formations and consciousness. These aggregates arise from the interaction of our sense organs, sense objects, and our consciousness.
The teachings state that by understanding the nature of these five aggregates and being liberated from desire for them one can achieve the state of Nirvana.
Understanding the nature of the aggregates is a central aspect of Buddhism and an important step on the path to enlightenment. It helps us deepen our understanding of ourselves and our world and liberates us from the untruths of our ego and false notions of self.
