Gooday Folks
This morning, after four days of trying to figure out how to get my washing machine to work, i managed to do it. Somehow the child-lock had come on, and the manual is in Bulgarian which i cannot read, but i did it.
I had already added some Amway concentrated (apparently) eco-friendly washing liquid four days ago, which i bought from a friend.
The cost of the Amway bottle was 25 Leva for 1 litre which works out about 1 Leva / 0.50 Euro's per washload (using 30 ml of liquid per load). Not so bad, but stll about four times the price of the usual toxic washing powder. I'm happy i don't use that stuff anymore as i wish to keep my garden organic as i'm growing food, so it's definitely worth the extra.
A couple of weeks ago one of my regular volunteers told me she had prepared some clothes washing liquid in a barrel using wood ash and water, and i just needed to leave it for a week or so, strain it though some cloth, then i can use it. She told me i need to use approx 150 ml per washload. I also had some hand washing to to (some things i bought in India with colors that run no matter how many times they are washed), so i decided to strain the wood-ash wahing liquid.
Easy-peasy, it took just 5 minutes and i ended up with around 3.5 litres of liquid, enough for around 20 wash-loads at zero cost. That's more like it!
I have always saved the wood-ash from the fires in the winter, knowing it had some uses. Last autumn some was sprinkled on apples when storing them in the cellar packed with straw to help preserve them, but i still have plenty left. I also always save any big plastic bottles knowing they will come in use sometime!
I just added the cucumbers to the picture for fun. They were harvested yesterday, and there are plenty more :-)
So, i handwashed the three non-colour fast items items using the new washing liquid, and it seemed to work ok. Virtually no suds, but lots of dirt came out!
It looks like it might rain! A couple of hours later, the items were dry and the machine washload had finished so:
Now, i just need to ask to remind me of the quantities of ash and water so i can make it all on my own next time.
Update
says the recipe calls for 1/3rd ash & 2/3rds water, but she thinks she made this batch more like 50/50.
Namaste
