I always used to think that about ties. The tie is such a bizarre item of clothing when you think about it. It's only for men, and it only developed in the late Victorian era. Why? I've often wondered if it's a symbol of being tied to your job, and/or your class. Maybe the lanyard is a replacement for the tie that women are also expected to wear.
