So a little while ago, I went out to the store. When I came back in,
I passed one of the three dumpsters that serve this complex.
This vacuum was just sitting there, minding its own business.
I backed up, got out to have a look. Of course the filter was
FILTHY
And the canister for it were was completely full.
Stunk like pet smell.
I emptied the canisters, washed the foam filter, got my
Compressed air I use for electronics
And blew all the accumulated dust and crap out of the filter
(just like the breather filter in a car, just smaller)
I set the foam ring on top of the car to begin drying.
Then I got an extension cord, some tools and went to work.
Right away when I plugged it in, it came on; whoever had
Used it last left it switched on.
Almost right away, smoke (smelling like burnt rubber) started
Coming out. I knew what that meant, the belt was not able
To turn and it was just being burned in two by the motor
Spindle.
I took all that apart, using the screwdriver, and then
With the screwdriver, that pick with the yellow handle
(Very handy things to have) I proceeded to clear out what was
Probably YEARS worth of accumulated dirt and dust
(which apparently had been wet at least once,
because it was very hard and dried in place)
When I got all that done, the 'beater bar' turned freely, all
Looked well until I began putting the screws back in;
then it wouldn't turn.
Took it all back apart and did some studying.
I THINK that the previous users had let it run for a long time
With the beater bar frozen, there was accumulation of rubber/plastic
In the groove where the drive belt goes around it.
I took the chisel and removed some of that, and it still didn't want
To turn when I tightened down the screws, so, I left them just a little
Bit loose.
Now, I have a slightly noisy but functioning Vacuum Cleaner.
