To be honest, we are discriminating against dealing with women in the job market and I am not ashamed to accept this bitter reality. I think this is not plain propaganda, but real life.
One of my female colleagues and I held the same job positions in the same company, although our responsibilities were different. She was in research and development, responsible for what was going on in the market and whatnot.
I looked after the marketing (technical part) of the job, supporting the salespeople and educating engineers from our clients’ companies. By the way, we came from the same engineering institute, the same batch, but different technical streams.
In fact, both of us were equally responsible for running the company smoothly in our own ways. I joined the company at the same point in time, but I spent some time on my training and onsite experience in Moscow before getting my first posting, so practically I was junior to her in a way.
Even though I had less experience (I started my actual work after one year), we both had equal qualifications, so they paid me a little more than they paid her. What surprised me was that people dealing with her did not take her seriously and she had to work harder to convince them. But convinced she did, and she did it to make a man jealous!
The reality of equality
All business houses know the fact that women are no less qualified, but still offer men more money and better promotion opportunities. I would say, pretty much everything is working in favor of men despite us boosting equality.
So, what is wrong if girls talk about or keep whining or ranting about working conditions?
And mind you guys, when I say women get less pay compared to men, it is not about in any one country but worldwide. Women in one of the world’s most developed countries, the United States of America, get almost 20% less than what men get for the same job.
What do you think? Is there any special reason behind the lower pay rate for women or are they less productive compared to men? Maybe business houses feel women are ready to work for less pay!
I think it is a combination of all the reasons mentioned above. However, things are looking up lately, and hopefully, women are being treated on par. Maybe we need to work more on this crucial topic! We need equality more than ever before, now.
There is sufficient evidence to support the view that job markets in developing countries are being transformed relatively quickly in the sense that gender differentials in employment and pay are narrowing much faster than they did in industrialized countries.
This also means and reveals that the result is invariable as losses going to women, while men gain mainly in relative terms. The question is, are there any real winners from discrimination? The answer is, the corporates and the petty employers!
What should women do?
To uplift women’s low initial human capital endowments and inferior job-market values compared to men’s, women should make greater efforts in their mental training, asking for equal pay and equal employment opportunities.
I think they should knock on the door of legislation for a better taxation and benefits structure that treats them on equal terms as an economic activity.
Isn’t it true that some people still believe that women are not even equal partners within households? They never consider women’s work and the production capacity in households, even if it’s so obviously visible.
