My youngest daughter graduated from Songchon High School today.
There was a graduation ceremony in the auditorium, but I had to park my car, so my wife and eldest daughter went in first and I went in the middle of the graduation ceremony.I entered the auditorium and stood at the end to watch. 오늘 막내 딸이 송촌고등학교를 졸업했다.
대강당에서 졸업식이 있었는데 차 주차 때문에 아내와 큰 딸은 먼저 들어가고 나는 중간에 들어갔다.
대강당에 들어가서 끝에 서서 보았다. "졸업과 새출발을 축하합니다"라는 프랭카드가 걸려있다. 선생님들로 구성된 밴드가 졸업 축하 노래를 불러줬다.
그리고 졸업 영상을 시청했다.
배경음악으로 건아들의 "이젠 안녕"이 흘러나왔다. 영상 속 출연자들은 노래를 따라 불렀다.
"이젠 안녕" 노래가사를 음미하면서 약간 심쿵했다.

graduation의 어원인 gradus는 라틴어로 단계(step)을 뜻한다

미국에서의 졸업은 commencement라고 부른다. commencement는 우리말로 ‘졸업식’ 또는 ‘학위 수여식’이라 번역된다. 그런데 이 단어의 또 다른 뜻은 ‘시작’이다.
