I had always for a long time heard of BTS, but I never really paid attention to them like that. They were just one of those names that kept popping up everywhere on Twitter, on random conversations, even in memes but I never actually sat down to listen to their music properly. In my head, I just categorized it as “not my thing” without even giving it a chance, i was more into afro beats and pop or hip hop music.
But this week, something funny happened. You know how YouTube can just carry you somewhere you didn’t plan to go? That’s exactly what happened to me. I was just casually listening to Eminem, going through some of his songs like I normally do, then one video led to another, then another, and before I even realized what was happening, I had entered a completely different space.
Next thing I see… BTS.
At first, I almost skipped it. I was like, “how did I even get here?” But something just made me stay and watch.
The first song I actually listened to was Dynamite, and I won’t lie, I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. It was just so… catchy, especially with the beats, The vibe was completely different from what I usually listen to, very upbeat and the video was very colorful and energetic. It felt like one of those songs you don’t even need to understand deeply, you just feel it. Music is never limited by language, you dont even need to understand what they are saying.
And that was where everything started, because once you listen to one song on YouTube, you already know what happens next. The algorithm does not rest. Before I knew it, I was listening to Fake Love, and that one really surprised me. The tone was completely different from Dynamite. It was more intense, and it just hit in a different way. Even though I don’t understand Korean, you could still feel the emotion in the song. The chorus especially just sticks with you.
At that point, I was actually enjoying this.
And it felt strange at first, because this wasn’t the kind of music I usually go for. But somehow, it just worked.
What really got me was how addictive it became. I kept telling myself, “okay, just one more song,” but it never stayed at one. It turned into a full YouTube session. I started watching performances, music videos, even random clips. It’s like once you enter that space, it’s hard to leave.
Now I understand why people keep talking about BTS all the time.
Before this, I used to think it was just hype, but now I get it. There’s actually something there and it’s funny because it all started from just trying to listen to Eminem.
Just one random click, and suddenly I’m here.
I won’t say I’m fully deep into K-pop yet, but I can’t lie, I’ve definitely started paying attention now.
Honestly, I didn’t expect this at all.
But yeah… YouTube really carried me this week 😄

저는 오랫동안 BTS에 대해 들어왔지만, 그들에게 그렇게 주의를 기울이지는 않았어요. 그들은 트위터, 무작위 대화, 심지어 밈에서도 계속 등장하는 이름 중 하나였지만, 나는 그들의 음악을 제대로 들어본 적이 없었어요. 내 머릿속에서는 그냥 "내 취향이 아니야"라고 분류해버렸고, 제대로 들어볼 기회도 주지 않았어. 나는 아프로 비트와 팝, 힙합 음악을 더 좋아했거든.
하지만 이번 주에 재미있는 일이 일어났어요. 유튜브가 당신을 원하지 않았던 곳으로 데려갈 수 있다는 거 아시죠? 그게 바로 저에게 일어난 일이에요. 저는 그냥 에미넴의 노래를 평소처럼 듣고 있었어요. 그러다가 하나의 비디오가 다른 비디오로 이어지고, 또 다른 비디오로 이어지면서, 제가 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지도 모르게 완전히 다른 공간에 들어가게 되었어요.
다음에 본 것… BTS.
처음에는 거의 건너뛸 뻔했어요. 나는 "어떻게 여기까지 오게 된 거지?"라고 생각했어. 하지만 뭔가가 나를 붙잡고 계속 보게 만들었어.
제가 실제로 처음 들은 노래는 Dynamite였고, 솔직히 말해서 그렇게 좋아할 줄은 몰랐어요. 그냥 너무… 중독성이 있었어요, 특히 비트가. 분위기가 제가 보통 듣는 것과는 완전히 달랐고, 매우 경쾌했어요. 비디오는 매우 다채롭고 에너지가 넘쳤어요. 깊이 이해할 필요도 없는 그런 노래 같았어요, 그냥 느끼면 되는. 음악은 결코 언어에 의해 제한되지 않아요, 그들이 무슨 말을 하는지 이해할 필요도 없어요.
그리고 그곳에서 모든 것이 시작되었죠, 왜냐하면 유튜브에서 한 곡을 듣기 시작하면 다음에 어떤 일이 일어날지 이미 알게 되니까요. 알고리즘은 쉬지 않아요. 모르는 사이에 Fake Love를 듣고 있었고, 그 곡은 정말 놀라웠어요. 톤이 다이너마이트와는 완전히 달랐어요. 더 강렬했고, 그냥 다른 방식으로 와닿았어요. 비록 한국어를 이해하지 못해도, 노래의 감정을 여전히 느낄 수 있었어요. 특히 후렴구가 정말 마음에 남아요.
그때쯤, 사실 이걸 즐기고 있었어요.
처음에는 이상하게 느껴졌어요, 왜냐하면 이건 제가 보통 좋아하는 음악이 아니었거든요. 하지만 어쩐지, 그냥 잘 맞았어요.
정말 나를 사로잡은 것은 그것이 얼마나 중독성이 강했는가 하는 것이었어요. 계속해서 "알겠어, 한 곡만 더 들어야지"라고 말했지만, 한 곡으로 끝나지 않았어. 완전한 유튜브 세션으로 변했어요. 공연, 뮤직 비디오, 심지어 랜덤 클립까지 보기 시작했어요. 그 공간에 들어가면 나가기 힘든 것 같아요.
이제 사람들이 왜 BTS에 대해 계속 이야기하는지 알겠어요.
이전에는 그저 과대선전이라고 생각했는데, 이제는 이해가 가요. 실제로 뭔가가 있고, 웃긴 건 이 모든 것이 에미넴을 듣고 싶어서 시작됐다는 거야.
그냥 무작위로 클릭했을 뿐인데, 갑자기 여기에 와버렸어.
아직 K-pop에 완전히 빠졌다고는 말할 수 없지만, 거짓말은 못하겠어요, 이제 확실히 관심을 가지기 시작했어요.
솔직히, 전혀 예상하지 못했어요.
하지만 그래도… 유튜브가 이번 주에 정말 큰 도움이 되었어요 😄
