Leprechaun Day is a holiday celebrated annually on May 13th that pays homage to these small, supernatural beings that emerged from Irish folklore and have won the hearts of millions of people worldwide. While Irish folklore is full of monsters and fantastical creatures like the Banshee, the Kelpie, the Fear Gorta, the Pooka, and the Changeling, the leprechaun is by far the most well-known outside of Ireland. These creatures, once only mentioned in cautionary tales, now appear in all kinds of media. They are used as mascots in pubs, can be found on cereal boxes, and even have their own six-film horror franchise.

The origins of Leprechaun Day are unknown. It appears to be a holiday that has been lost to time. All we can do is speculate that it was probably invented as a holiday. Although we don't know the origins of this holiday, we are quite familiar with the story of the leprechaun. It dates back to 8th-century tales about water spirits that were then known as "Luchorpán," a word meaning "small body."

Over time, these stories merged with fairy tales, particularly those of house fairies, and suddenly they were no longer water spirits, but creatures who ended up drinking the household liquor stores. The word Luchorpán gave way to the word "Leprechaun," which comes from the Irish term "Leath Bhrogan" and means "shoemaker." These stories persisted for hundreds of years in Ireland and were carried by Irish immigrants to other parts of the world during the Irish emigration of the 19th and 20th centuries. As this folkloric creature became integrated into the broader popular culture of the United States, it underwent a certain transformation.

Sad things happen. Smiles and tears get shared. Worries and hopes are passed around. Sometimes, we even eat #pizza, cake and ice cream. Sometimes, we watch movies. Sometimes, giant insects attack the microphones and we have to get out our silly swatters and smack 'em up so we have something to snack on because the popcorn got eaten already by little slugs that left slimy trails everywhere and made the sidewalks slippery so that the pancakes didn't get enough traction on our canoes to steer the spaceships. Exactly.
