Die Bürgerwiese trägt ihren Namen, da sie in früherer Zeit, als sie sich noch vor den Toren der Stadt befand, von den Bürgern als Wiese- und Weideland genutzt wurde. Im 19. Jh. wurde sie nach den Plänen des Gartenarchitekten Peter Joseph Lenné als öffentliche Parkanlage gestaltet und mit mehreren Plastiken geschmückt. Im Jahre 1907 wurde hier auch der von Hermann Hosaeus geschaffene Mozartbrunnen eingeweiht. Dargestellt sind die drei Grazien, welche den musikalischen Dreiklang Ernst, Anmut und übermütige Heiterkeit darstellen, wie sie für Mozarts Musik charakteristisch sind. Die drei aus vergoldeter Bronze gearbeiteten Frauengestalten halten sich an den Händen und tanzen um einen an einem Wasserbecken stehenden Mozart-Gedenkstein.
Der Brunnen wurde im 2. Weltkrieg schwer zerstört und verfiel in den Folgejahren weiter. Im Jahre 1991 wurde die Figurengruppe vom Bildhauer Eberhard Wolf nach den Original neu erschaffen um dann pünktlich zum 200. Todestag von Mozart feierlich eingeweiht zu werden.
The Bürgerwiese got its name because in former times, when it was still outside the gates of the town, it was used by the citizens as meadow and pasture land. In the 19th century, it was designed as a public park according to the plans of the garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné and decorated with several sculptures. In 1907 the Mozart Fountain created by Hermann Hosaeus was inaugurated here. It depicts the three Graces, which represent the musical triad of seriousness, grace and exuberant cheerfulness that are so characteristic of Mozart's music. The three female figures made of gilded bronze hold hands and dance around a Mozart memorial stone standing at a water basin.
The fountain was severely destroyed in the 2nd World War and continued to deteriorate in the following years. In 1991, the sculptor Eberhard Wolf re-created the group of figures according to the originals and inaugurated it in time for the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death.
