Just think about a scenario in which you wake up as an ordinary citizen, and before the day ends, you’ve become the president. No long political career, no connections, no years spent inside elite circles. Just you, selected at random, suddenly placed in charge of the entire country for one month. It is the law.
If I had the power to create a law, it would be something like a “Citizen Presidency Rotation Act.” I know it sounds absurd but not to me to be honest Under this system, every year or every 6 months, one qualified citizen would be randomly chosen to serve as president for a single month, after some checks and all, working alongside the existing democratic system. It wouldn’t replace elections, but it would introduce something completely different into governance.
When you think of the idea deeply, i believe it addresses one of the biggest problems in modern politics, the gap between leaders and ordinary citizens. Many politicians spend years moving up the political ladder, and over time they can become disconnected from the real struggles people face daily.
A randomly selected citizen leader would change that. This would be someone who has actually experienced the realities of the country, waiting in long queues, worrying about basic expenses, dealing with poor public services, and navigating everyday challenges. They wouldn’t need reports or advisors to explain these problems, they’ve lived them. That kind of firsthand experience could bring a new level of urgency and honesty into decision making.
This law i believe will also reduce corruption. When leadership becomes unpredictable and rotates outside the usual political sphere or class, it becomes much harder to build long term corrupt systems. You can’t easily plan or invest in influencing someone who might only be in power for a month and could be replaced by anyone be it a teacher, a trader, or a farmer. That unpredictability disrupts the stability that corruption often depends on. The idea that “someone like me could be in that position” could reshape how people engage with politics entirely, make them more interested in politics.
Of course realistically, a system like this would need proper structure to work. The one-month president wouldn’t act alone they would rely on experienced civil servants and advisors to maintain stability. Also from my pov what makes this idea compelling is the kind of accountability it creates. When politicians know that leadership could come from outside their usual circles at any time, it pressures them to govern more responsibly.
