Plot
Bombshell tells the facts involving Fox News' journalists Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) and Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) in the real "bombshell" case of sexual harrasments. Both journalists, though "oldster" at FoxNews, are constantly given opportunities to rebel against the authority and to denounce it for all the year of sexual abuses and discriminations at work led by their head and many other important male White collars. However only one of the two, Carlson, finally sick of the absurd working conditions women at Fox were forced to suffer, stands up thanks to an articulated move which saw her fired from the company, and which makes her able to denounce years and years of abuses.
And it's only after Carlson's action, that does Kelly find the strenght and bravery to stand herself too, and one after the other, all the women working at Fox, pushed firstly by Carlson and Kelly's voices, but then by one the other, find their own voice and denounce all the men in power who constantly, throughout the years at FoxNews, took advantages of their roles to abuse the female journalists by using subtle tricks, force, blackmail, and many more awful actions.
Names and roles are clearly mentioned and underlined, as Carlson and (too) many women got their lives ruined by those unsavory men, and all them got actually either arrested, after receiving hundreds of accusations by hundreds of different women, or forced to pay back years and years of compensations for all the material and non-material damages caused.
Sad story happy: the three protagonists flow through the very same work context, each one in different ways though, but in the end the viewer is provided with a solid resolution which however can only relieve the souls and spirits of the three and all the women.
Take-home messages
As a matter of fact, Bombshell tells a real story, real facts with real people, even using real names and actors with great makeups in order to look as much as possible like the real protagonists of this dramatic event. And sometimes it's just so true that we can all learn from life and real events than we could ever do from made-up stories and fictional movies. If there's one thing I learnt from the story of Bombshell is that all #women might be suffering from hiding a huge "bomb", simply because that bomb is commonly accepted in the context it is happening.
The second thing I learnt is that once only one person inside the context stands up againts the bomb and makes it start its countdown, it is basically impossible to defuse, because the situation reached a the point of non-return right from the beginning, when the very first inappropriate and unethical action is taken.
If only one woman can be freed from sexual harrasment, abuse, and discrimination is by another woman's voice and courage, which, just like a domino effect, can affect all women living the same experience, suffering from the same unease, and coexisting with the same feelings of shame.
Please, no matter if you're a woman or not, take the time to watch this film because it's really worthy. And of course, if you watched it, feel free to live a comment and open up the conversation! I'm always happy to talk about movies on Hive!
