When it comes to movies, everyone has their favorite genre. Some of us crave the excitement of action-packed thrillers, others love the spine-chilling suspense of horror, and some are drawn to the emotional rollercoasters of romance. As for me, I enjoy all of these genres and I always go for what genre I crave for, but the movie Secret Superstar, a 2017 Bollywood drama, left an indelible mark on my heart and taught me an important lesson that transcends the boundaries of movie.
Secret Superstar tells the story of Insiya, a teenage girl from a small town in India who dreams of becoming a famous singer. However, she faces opposition from her conservative, controlling father, who discourages her aspirations and forces her into a life of silence and subjugation, her mother even suffered for it. Despite the hardships, Insiya secretly uploads a video of herself singing on YouTube, under the alias "Secret Superstar," and her journey toward self-expression and empowerment begins.
What struck me most about Secret Superstar was the theme of following your dreams despite the obstacles in your way, and finding your voice even when the world, especially those closest to you wants to silence you. The film is not just about pursuing a passion but also about finding the courage to stand up for yourself and for what you believe in. It’s a powerful message about self-empowerment and the importance of independence.
The lesson I took away from Secret Superstar was that no dream is too big to pursue, and no one should ever let fear or external pressure stop them from reaching for it. Insiya’s journey is a reminder that your passion and your voice matter, even if society or your own family may not understand or support it. She didn’t let her father’s abuse or societal expectations crush her dream of becoming a singer. She used her talent and her courage to carve out her own path, showing that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply believe in ourselves.
Secret Superstar speaks to broader themes of personal freedom, resilience, and self-discovery, especially for young women who often find themselves caught between tradition and ambition. Watching Insiya’s transformation from a girl who is too scared to even sing in front of her family to a confident artist who embraces her talent and speaks up for herself was nothing short of inspiring.
Though I’ve enjoyed many films in different genres, it’s stories like Secret Superstar that remind me of the power of perseverance and the importance of staying true to yourself. While action films can excite and horror films can thrill, movies that tap into the emotional fabric of human experiences, like this one, have a lasting impact.
Seriously, Secret Superstar taught me a valuable lesson that no matter how many obstacles stand in our way, our dreams are worth fighting for, and we all have the power to change our own narrative. And sometimes, it just takes one act of courage, like singing your heart out in a YouTube video, to begin that transformation.
