Greetings, everyone.
If I could create a single law for my country, it would be one that might sound strange at first. A law guaranteeing all residents the right to have their employer pay for a trip abroad during their vacation. The destination and duration would depend on the accumulated savings, negotiable between the parties. But the obligation to provide that trip, or the means to do so, would fall on the employer.
I know it sounds absurd in a country with so many basic needs. People will say: food first, housing first. And they're right in the short term. But I think long-term. For years I've seen how isolation shrinks us. It limits us. We grow up hearing only one version of events, seeing only one landscape, always interacting with the same people. And that creates a narrow mind, a fear of difference, an inability to compare and improve.
If every worker, from the street sweeper to the doctor, had the opportunity to travel, even just once in their life, something would change in their mindset. They would return with different ideas. With different ways of doing things. With the certainty that the world is bigger than the block where they live and that there are other ways to organize a society, a job, a family.
And I'm not talking about luxury. I'm talking about learning. Those who travel and see how transportation works in another place come back and ask why it can't be like that here. Those who see a store with a variety of products come back and wonder why it's always missing here. Those who talk to someone from another culture come back with a slightly more open mind.
A country of people who have traveled is a country that is harder to deceive. Harder to be satisfied with crumbs. It is a country that demands, that compares, that wants to improve. This law, although it may seem frivolous, would be an investment in human development. In real culture, not the culture of speeches, but the culture that is absorbed by seeing other realities. Because well-being is not just about having a full refrigerator. It is also about having a head full of the world. And that is only achieved by going out, seeing, and learning.

Si pudiera crear una ley única para mi país, sería una que pudiera sonar extraña al principio. Una ley que garantizara a todos los habitantes del país el derecho a que su empleador le pagara un viaje al extranjero durante las vacaciones. El destino y la duración dependerían del valor acumulado, negociable entre las partes. Pero la obligación de proveer ese viaje, o los medios para hacerlo, sería del empleador.
Sé que suena a disparate en un país con tantas carencias básicas. La gente dirá: primero el plato de comida, primero la vivienda. Y tienen razón en lo inmediato. Pero yo pienso a largo plazo. Llevo años viendo cómo el aislamiento nos encoge. Nos limita. Crecemos escuchando una sola versión de las cosas, viendo un solo paisaje, relacionándonos siempre con los mismos. Y eso genera una mente estrecha, un miedo a lo distinto, una incapacidad para comparar y mejorar.
Si cada trabajador, desde el barrendero hasta el médico, tuviera la posibilidad de viajar, aunque fuera una vez en la vida, algo cambiaría en su cabeza. Volvería con otras ideas. Con otras formas de hacer las cosas. Con la certeza de que el mundo es más grande que la cuadra donde vive y que hay otras maneras de organizar una sociedad, un trabajo, una familia.
Y no hablo de lujo. Hablo de aprendizaje. El que viaja y ve cómo funciona el transporte en otro lugar, vuelve y pregunta por qué aquí no puede ser así. El que ve una tienda con productos variados, vuelve y se pregunta por qué aquí siempre falta. El que conversa con alguien de otra cultura, vuelve con la cabeza un poco más abierta.
Un país de gente que ha viajado es un país más difícil de engañar. Más difícil de conformar con migajas. Es un país que exige, que compara, que quiere mejorar. Esta ley, aunque parezca frívola, sería una inversión en desarrollo humano. En cultura real, no la de los discursos, sino la que se mama viendo otras realidades. Porque el bienestar no es solo tener la nevera llena. Es también tener la cabeza llena de mundo. Y eso, solo se consigue saliendo, viendo, conociendo.
