If you had the power to create a single law in your country right now, what would it be?
This is something ive always thought of and id just put it here, since i dont think it will ever happen but the idea behind it is actually quite straightforward and it stems form the idea that i believe that Politics should be about service, not about wealth, or personal gain as it often is nowadays. Unfortunately, in many countries, especially in places where corruption has become deeply rooted, politics has turned into one of the most lucrative careers someone can pursue. Instead of people entering government to improve the nation, some individuals enter politics because of the benefits attached to the office. Self interest
In the country where im from, politicians often receive numerous allowances and perks. These can include housing allowances, travel allowances, security allowances, wardrobe allowances, and they even get official vehicles that are replaced every few years and this is actually a law that is bound, they made a law that makes it mandatory for the Government to change their official/personal cars every few years from tax payers money. When you add everything together, the total compensation becomes extremely high in a country bedeviled by multi dimensional poverty, compared to what ordinary citizens earn. Meanwhile, many Nigerians are struggling with unemployment, rising prices, and limited opportunities.
This is why I believe a minimum wage law for politicians would be a powerful reform. Under this law, elected officials would earn the same basic salary as an entry-level government worker, they will be paid the minimum wage and that is it. There would be no extra allowances, no luxury vehicles purchased with public funds, and no special privileges beyond what is absolutely necessary to perform their duties, if they want a better salary or wages then they should raise the minimum wage for the whole country and that is how theirs can also improve.
The goal is not to punish them but to change the motivation behind entering politics. If political offices stop being financially attractive, many opportunists who are only interested in money will likely stay away. The people who still choose to run for office would most likely be those who genuinely care about improving the country and serving the public. When the financial incentives disappear, what remains is the true desire to lead and contribute.
I believe that it would also bring politicians closer to the everyday realities of ordinary citizens. If leaders are earning roughly what the average worker earns, they will have a much better understanding of the economic challenges people face. Policies about wages, transportation, healthcare, and education would no longer be abstract discussions, they would be personal experiences. You cant expect someone who doesnt experience or even care about your reality vie for its improvement.
Of course, passing such a law would not magically solve all of Nigeria’s problems. Corruption, inefficiency, and political struggles would not disappear overnight. However, it would send a very powerful message, public office is a responsibility. By making politics unattractive, we might finally begin to attract the kind of leaders who are motivated not by money, but by the genuine desire to build a better future for everyone.
