I'm fluent in Yoruba because I am Yoruba, and it's my mother tongue, Yoruba is a tribe in Nigeria and Yoruba is predominantly spoken in the southwestern part of Nigeria, which includes Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Ogun. Nigeria is a diverse country with many tribes, such as Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, Tiv, Kanuri,Edo, Ibibio, Efik, Uhobo and more. Because of this, English serves as our national language, helping us communicate with each other. We learn English from a young age, starting from kindergarten.
Some parents prefer their children to speak only English at home, which can lead to a loss of proficiency in their mother tongue. However, I believe it's possible for a child to excel in both their native language and English. I'm proficient in both Yoruba and English.
Lately, I've developed an interest in learning Korean, inspired by my love for Korean movies. When I was in secondary school, I was so engrossed in watching K-dramas that I'd spend hours watching them without stopping. Although I have more responsibilities now, my fondness for Korean movies remains, and I've grown interested in the language. I've already picked up basic phrases like 'father,' 'mother,' 'alright,' and 'okay' in Korean. My dream is to travel to Korea one day and become proficient in the language or learn it somewhere else.
