When I think about the journey of my life so far, one thing stands out — the women around me. From my mum to my sisters, friends, aunties, even women I’ve only met briefly… each of them has dropped a lesson that shaped me in some way.
You know that saying, “it takes a village”? I think it also applies to sisterhood. My village of women has taught me more than any book ever could. Let me share some of those lessons with you — maybe you’ll see a reflection of the women in your own life too.
- Power is Not Showcasing.
Among the initial teachings my mum gave me is that strength can be silent. She never had to raise her voice to make us realize that she meant business. The example that she gave me was that occasionally strength lies in how you remain consistent, in how you turn up even when it is difficult, in how you carry your family.
- Praise Other Women Without Jealously.
I literally read about this in a book by Joyce Meyer, at least I think so 🤔, but in fact, one of my classmates used to make me feel even more hyped than I did. She would pretend it was a national prize in case I won a small amount of money. That one was a lesson in itself: when you honor other women, you do not take away your shine. In fact, it multiplies it.
- Weakness is not Vulnerability.
At one point, I had a breakdown before my sister and told her, I am tired. Initially, she was surprised since she believed I was the toughest person she knew. However, I now understand that even being able to say that you are not okay is a form of strength. I was reminded that seeking assistance does not imply that you are weak, but rather, that you are human.
- Growth Comes From Honest Conversations
Some of my deepest personal growth came from books by the most broken women and also moments when my mum or close friends corrected me. It wasn’t always easy to hear, but those “hard truths” made me better. Sisterhood has taught me that honesty wrapped in love can push you forward more than fake support ever could.
- Laughter Heals More Than We Realize
There were times when I was down, but a simple hangout with my girls lifted the weight off my chest. We laughed till tears rolled down our faces, and for that moment, the world felt light again. That’s another lesson: never underestimate the healing power of laughter shared with women who understand you.
Final Thoughts
The sisterhood around me is like a mirror: sometimes it reflects my strengths, other times it shows me the areas I need to work on. But above all, it reminds me that I don’t have to walk alone.
If you have women around you — sisters, friends, mothers, aunties, even colleagues — take a moment to notice the lessons they’re teaching you. You might be surprised how much wisdom is hidden in their everyday actions.
