The statement "You don't owe anyone a thing" is one which I believe was coined to tackle the sheer entitlement of many humans and also to encourage givers to feel less pressured to succumb to the demands of others. Unfortunately, this has been misunderstood by many as they've gone on to use it as an excuse to be unkind and lacking of morals.
I'm sure with proper enlightenment of the actual meaning and focus on positivity, more people will begin to think less in absolutes.
