Bullying is one of those things that most people recognize immediately if they actually want to cos the signs i believe are always their and are evident yet it’s often underestimated in terms of how deeply it affects people, especially in societies wherein mental health is not appreciated or is not even talked about. When you strip it down, bullying is about power, someone trying to reduce another person just to feel bigger and the thing is, it doesn’t just live in schools. It starts there for many people, but it grows and changes as life goes on.

In school, bullying can be very direct. It could be the student who constantly mocks someone’s appearance, the group that excludes one person on purpose, or even physical intimidation. I remember situations where someone would become the “target” of jokes, and over time, it stopped being funny and started becoming part of that person’s identity in the eyes of others. The horrible part is how normal it can start to feel. People laugh along, not necessarily because they agree, but because they don’t want to become the next target, or they dont want to be the odd one out like the person being bullied

But then again i believe to a larger extent what really stays with people isn’t just the act itself, it’s the silence around it. Teachers sometimes see it and dismiss it as “kids being kids.” Other students notice but don’t step in. As people grow older, bullying doesn’t disappear, it evolves. Online spaces have also created a new spectrum by which bullyin occurs. Social media bullying can be relentless because it doesn’t stop when you leave a physical space. Someone can be harassed continuously, often by people who feel anonymous and detached from the consequences of their actions, which makes it all the more worse.

What makes bullying particularly dangerous to a person is how it chips away at confidence over time. A single comment might not mean much, but repeated over weeks or months, it can change how someone sees themselves. People start doubting their worth, holding back in situations where they should feel comfortable and become more secluded, and one thing i know is that human beings were not made to live in isolation but to be social creatures that interact.

Addressing bullying requires more than just telling people to “be nice.” It requires courage, nothing a bully hates more than someone that can stand up for themselves. Schools need to also take it seriously and not protect perpetrators for the sake of reputation or whatever. Awareness is so important and i love what the korean series and media is doing with regards to bullying, they really amplify and show the evils of bullying in their movies/series.
