My wife and I were on a double date last night with another couple. We usually end up talking about some very interesting things. Somehow we transitioned from talking about avoiding certain retail stores, to creating email addresses to help track who sold your information online, which then led us to an interesting topic for the night. I call it the 867-5309 rewards program.

My friend explained that some people came up with the idea of not giving out their own phone number for store rewards programs. If you grew up in the 80s or listened to 80s music, then you've no doubt heard the song, "867-309/Jenny." If you haven't heard it, here's a link to it:
When asked to enter a phone number for rewards, some people have resorted to entering 867-5309 after their local area code. Unless you're the first one to try this, it'll likely come up with multiple fake names, like "Guy." What might surprise you even more is there will likely be a massive amount of rewards points pooled under this one number.
The risk in doing this is some places will ask you to confirm your name. Other places don't care and you'll likely have an easier time using the points. Some may even understand the joke and appreciate the humor. It's a bit of a gamble, but then again you're not having to give out your personal information. At the end of the day it's just rewards points, but it's a clever way of using them, and someone may even get a good laugh from it. The next time I'm asked to enter a number, I'll have to give it a try and report back on my findings.
