Some of those things you need are under lock and key. It's never on the surface, it's buried and hidden so that you can dig. Even natural resources sit deep in the earth and undergo a rigorous process of refining before their beauty is established.
Not every valuable thing is beautiful on the onset or on the surface.
Gold doesn’t shine until the dirt is washed off. Dross needs to be cleaned for silver to shine. Diamonds don’t shine until pressure and heat have done their work. There are other valuable things that their usefulness is in the dirt like coal, it doesn't need to be beautiful as diamond. It gives heat, strength and power to everything around it.
