I think one of the most wonderful things to talk about when it comes to dessert is ice cream.🍨 I’ve always loved ice cream for its simplicity. Of course, that’s before I knew that ice cream isn’t simple at all and not just because there are numerous flavours and even more being created by the seasons.
Growing up, two types of ice creams characterized my childhood, the little ones in sachets by the street vendors outside school and the other ones I’d termed bougie cause they were in cute containers and only sold in eateries and malls. While the former was kind of addictive and a much looked-forward-to delight, especially during the blazing summer heat, the latter was reserved for more festive occasions like birthdays or if the parents were in an extra indulging mood.
The sachet ice creams that were way cheaper couldn’t be compared to those sold at the malls. The latter had a more creamy, genuine taste but the former was just sugary with a hint of whatever flavour they termed it to be like banana or vanilla. I stopped eating these when I was thirteen and insisted on taking only the mall ones as I felt those were the actual ice cream. I particularly loved the chocolate and vanilla combo.
Then I travelled to another state on a vacation and my cousin took me to this eatery that sold only ice cream. I tried to mask my disappointment because I didn’t see the need to eat what I was already used to since I felt vacations were for trying out things that weren’t on our usual radar. We got in and I gasped when I was given a menu to pick the flavour I wanted.
What do you mean there were more flavours than chocolate, vanilla and strawberry? How was that even possible? I dazedly picked the peanut butter and chocolate ice cream hoping it would taste nice. The salesperson fixing it for me did it in such an artistic way like the ice cream bowl was his canvas and he was slashing the ice cream in however he pleased. Very interesting stuff.
And finally, I had a taste and I can remember asking myself, is this ice cream? So what have I been eating all this while? I was transported to a haven I didn’t know existed. My cousin just looked at me over her ice cream bowl smugly like she had just found the keys to life and death or something. And in a way, she had given me life because I was on some next-level euphoria. I ate up the ice cream and asked for another bowl. When I saw the bill afterwards, my smile wavered. Of course, good stuff like that had to be extra expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, it was still worth it.
The rest of the vacation was spent with me visiting that eatery at least twice a week. I tried other flavours and none of them disappointed me, okay except one coconut-based flavour I had. That didn’t go too well but it was overall a wonderful experience. That was two years ago and when I got back to my state, I sought ice cream eateries like that but wasn’t very successful.
The last time I got really good ice cream was a couple months back with Wongi. Of course, the price for each scoop was beyond the roof and as we had already spent a lot that day, we didn’t have much to completely satisfy our craving but it was still nice as we ate our little scoops and had a good laugh over it. I tried another one after, chocolate and peanut popsicle. Really nice too.
I know I’ve not begun to explore all the ice cream flavours available and that’s one wonderful thing about ice cream. The variety. So, I look forward to going on more ice cream adventures and this time, hopefully, take tons of delightful pictures.
