Item Day is a significant cultural occasion celebrated annually on December 30th. This grand event honors the nine clowns that make up the Item community, with each clown having its unique identity and significance. The celebration is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Item people.
The nine clowns of Item are:
Akanu Item, Amaokwe Item, Okoko Item, Amaekpu Item, Apaehu Item, Okai Item, Umuekpa Item,Amaeke Item, Okagwo Item.
Traditionally, Item Day is held at Amaokwo Item, which boasts a sprawling field reminiscent of "Old Trafford" stadium. The venue's large capacity, excellent parking facilities, and central location make it an ideal spot for the celebration. However, this year, the other clowns decided to rotate the hosting duties, and Akanu Item was chosen as the new venue.
The event was a grand success, attracting prominent dignitaries such as Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti (OFR), the House Speaker, and high-ranking chiefs. The festivities featured a spectacular display of masquerades, Ohafia war dancers, and cultural dancers, which electrified the atmosphere.
The celebration was a testament to the community's unity and cultural richness. It was a day to cherish and reflect on the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
