In all of my years of making knives, I have only made myself a couple. I have made two using a piece of D2 steel, one using some repurposed steel from a saw mill, and now this beauty using 1095 steel.
The two that were using the D2 steel were really awesome. I mean, I still have it, and it is still awesome. You can definitely tell that it was my first one for myself. I used a piece of steel that a buddy had given me as a gift. He told me that if I ever build one for myself then I should use that steel. So I made two!
The one that I carry is more of a full sized fixed blade, and the handles are walnut. The walnut came from a tree that was blown down in a storm. I took a big piece of it and let it set out for a year. I used my chainsaw to cut a slab, and then a friend of mine used his planer to make it thin enough to be knife scales. So it is a nice reminder of Missouri.
The second one of that set was a small fixed blade pocket knife. I made a pancake sheath and carried it around in my front pocket. It was a cut little one and it also had a walnut handle. I carried that one nearly everyday for a few months, but fate smiled on me and I was able to trade it for 25 chickens!
My third on is a small neck knife. It is made from re-purposed steel and the handle is made from a piece of piano leg. The piano leg was a layered laminate full of colors. The outer most layer was black so you couldn't tell, but once I shaped it it had a nice multi colored almost tie dyed look. I also made the custom sheath and I wear it as a neck knife.
Now this one...this one...I am really excited about. Maybe it is the material. Maybe it is new skills that I have learned. I do think that this knife is way better than the others that I have made myself. It is 3/16" thick 1095 high carbon steel. The handles is two layers of canvas micarta and 1/8" black micarta pins.
So the story on the handle is that I received a box of goodies from masecraftsupply.com and they sent me a whole mix of handle scales, liners, and other things that I'm not sure how to use yet. I have been using the micarta and G10 for other knives, but I had one that was really catching my eye. It was a brown/khaki canvas micarta. It looks awesome, but it was very thin. There was another piece of that same micarta but it is a green color.
So I fixed the issue and glued them together! I used the green colored micarta as liners and then the khaki ones as the actual handle material. When I shaped it all out you can see the layers inside, and it reminds me of some kind of poker chip. I'm not sure, but I love the shiny and used look.
I finished the blade with a 220 grit paper and buffed it to get a darker look. I left the bevels with the "dirty" bevel look. I have been sending this style out like crazy and I love it.
So now all I have to do is create a custom sheath for it whenever I get a piece of leather.
I hope you all are enjoying my builds. I would love to hear your feed back. If you are interested in a custom knife I accept PayPal and Crypto!!
Be well
