Hello to all this beautiful family of Mundo Autismo, receive a cordial greeting, hoping you will be pleasantly blessed. Yes, as you read in the title of my post, April 2nd is celebrated every year as World Autism Awareness Day. I want to write about this topic that is very little addressed and even unknown by many.

Starting with me, I did not know that this date existed until I had a person with this condition. I am a preschool teacher in my country Venezuela and I have realized how the statistics have grown in my country with children who suffer from it and that in most cases we do not know both teachers and parents, and if it exists we do not want to recognize it and if so it is difficult to help.

That is why we must echo this very special event to promote the rights of people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). It is important to highlight that ASD is a neurological disability that lasts a person's whole life, affecting their way of interacting, communicating and learning from a being, who in most cases is misunderstood.
I think that if you don't deal with children or people like that you can't recognize to what extent it is so even if they tell you so. This is the case of Andres, a child who comes to my homework and who I had to practically leave other children to stay with him. Andres is a child with ASD diagnosed at a very young age because he had problems at birth and since then his parents have had to change their way of life.
Today Andres is 8 years old, he studies 3rd grade of elementary school in my country and I help him with his homework. Obviously a child with ASD does not learn at the same pace as a child who does not have this disability. In our country the inclusion of children with special needs in the regular classroom was a provision of the government since 2014, but it has not been easy because many teachers are not prepared to serve both groups.
The lack of information and ignorance has caused many people to express their rejection of this population that for many years has been stigmatized in schools, workplaces and other places. For me it has been a challenge to take care of Andres who I consider, without being a specialist in the area, a very intelligent child but who learns at his own pace.
Likewise, early attention in these children is very important if possible before the age of 7 years old, this allows them to advance faster in their neurodevelopment. Thanks to God, Andres is being cared for from an early age and this allows him, even with his disability, to develop in a social and family environment that is optimal for his growth.
In Venezuela, the National Assembly recently approved a Law for the Comprehensive Care of Persons with ASD that seeks to guarantee the rights of this population, as well as to promote early and timely diagnosis.
That is why since 2007 every April 2nd, we celebrate this date which was decreed by the United Nations in order to contribute to improving the quality of life of people with ASD and include them as full citizens in all areas of society. Let's celebrate with joy this special dat
