Meet "The Middleman" 🏦
Imagine you want to send 5 Digital Points to your friend, Sam, to buy a rare comic book. Since you can't hand Sam a physical coin through the internet, you have to ask a Bank to help.
The Bank is like a giant, super-powerful referee. When you hit "send," the Bank stops everything and checks its big book of secrets:
- Does Alex actually have 5 points? (The Bank looks at your account).
- Is Alex allowed to send them? (The Bank checks the rules).
- Okay, I'll take 5 from Alex and give 5 to Sam. (The Bank updates the screens).
The "Middleman" Hiccups
Having a referee is helpful, but it can also cause some "hiccups":
- The Waiting Game: Sometimes the Bank takes a nap (on weekends or holidays), and your money stays stuck in "processing" for days!
- The Toll Booth: The Bank might say, "Sure, I'll move your 5 points, but I'm keeping 1 point for myself as a fee!"
- The Permission Slip: Sometimes the Bank might say "No," even if it’s your money! They have the power to stop the trade whenever they want.

Think about when you give a friend a real, physical $1 bill in person.
- You don't need a bank.
- You don't need a computer.
- It happens right now.

Find two friends (or family members).
- Person A wants to give a "Digital Cookie" to Person B.
- Person C is the "Middleman Bank."
- Person A cannot talk to Person B. They must whisper to the Bank, "Give my cookie to B."
- The Bank has to check a piece of paper to see if Person A has a cookie first, then write down the change.
Now try it without the Bank! Person A just hands a paper "Cookie" to Person B.
