New better?

People these days have a voracious appetite for new things and for more than they have - even if what they have is sufficient to perform the job or task it's supposed to.

The desire for new and more seems to drive people mad in a constant cycle of get something, get bored, want a new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored...well, I think you get the idea. People seem addicted to the process and in so doing can often acquire far more than they need and at a cost far more than they can afford and they push into the credit debt area.

I wonder though, is new always better?

Sure, I think new stuff can be nice and I have a load of new stuff. Is my new stuff better than the older stuff? Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

I guess my main focus is, do I need it or want it, and after making that determination and measuring up the thing against my budget I'll decide what I'll do. But generally, no I do not think a new thing is necessarily "better" than an old thing. It's all subjective and dependent upon the item or service.

That truck in the image has over a million kilometres on it...that's the second engine too - the first had over a million on it also. Could the operator buy a new one? Yes, he's got plenty of money. Does he need to? No he does not - the current one is still fit for purpose. I kind of like the way the guy thinks which is why we're friends I suppose. He figures that if it ain't broke why fix it, or get a new one.

Anyway, I wonder what you think.

Do you think new is better? Do you have a need over want buying methodology? What have you bought new and been disappointed with and why? Do you feel people fall needless into credit debt just to have new things? Do you feel comfortable with something that's not the latest thing?
