Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.
- Robert Louis Stevenson -
The word 'poor' means a couple of different things if you ask the dictionary:
One relates to a lack of sufficient financial means to live at an established 'standard' of living within a particular society and the other relates to a lack of quality. Pretty straightforward I guess.
A few days ago, I had a really good chat with a girl I know about poor people but I don't mean people who are financially poor, I mean people who live a 'poor quality life' due to the actions they take or do not take.
We discussed why it happens - why people choose to live lacklustre lives without vitality, direction and positive action - and we came up with a lot of potential reasons chatting about how and why a person could (and should) make better choices. Of course, one's perception of what a lacklustre, uninspiring life looks like may vary to the other, but we were just talking generally.
Here's the six main headings we came up with although there were many more. We decided that these six were the things a person could quite easily address:
- Too much TV and gaming - Life happens in the real world, not inside games and TV screens., turning them off opens opportunities
- No hobbies or activities - Boredom is destructive and hobbies, interests and activities keep a person engaged and involved with their lives and provides drive and ambition.
- A lack of passion for life - This ties into point two. One follows the other.
- Staying within established boundaries and comfort zones - Stepping outside of one's comfort zone can energise (reenergise) the mind and body reveal new paths forward, bring excitement and new passions.
- Sitting back waiting - Holding back waiting until the magic happens won't make magic happen, it takes effort, vision, passion and energy. Magic exists all around us, a person just has to be open to it and reach for it.
- Blame - This is a massive negative force in a person's life, blaming others. If blame is replaced with positive action, ownership and responsibility doors open and through those doors is a better life.
What do you think? What elements do you feel a person holds on to that keeps them 'poor in life' instead of helping them reach and get closer to a more engaged, fulfilled and interesting life that they drive themselves?
Id you'd like to comment about your person experiences, thoughts or to tell me I'm nuts and don't know what I'm talking about then go ahead below.
