Yesterday I asked a question about personal and home security prompted by the steep rise of violent crime around the world, a post you can read here.
I was pleased to see a whole lot of responses from people who think about it and actively work towards minimising the chances of it occurring. We don't all have the same level or readiness but some is better than none.

I'm extending the conversation to a related topic
There's many reasons why violent crime occurs and why it's on the rise. Some of these are specific to particular locations and countries, some are socio-economic, lack of parental attachment, mental health issues, friends and peer pressure, greed and ego, bravado, race and religion and probably a whole lot more.
Furthermore, there's various reasons why the rate of increase in violent crime is so steeply inclined such as the overloaded judicial process, prisons filled to bursting point leaving people on the street, lack of effective rehabilitation (so reoffenders), diminishing powers of law-makers and law-keepers and other such things. It's all spiraling out of control a little more each year and those who suffer are...well, everyone in our society, not just the victims.
So, I figured I'd see what y'all thought about it, what your personal opinions are (if you have any) - if you'd like to make a response to the question below please go ahead in the comments.
Why do you believe violent crime and crime in general is on the rise, do you feel there's a way to slow it down and possibly reverse it and if so what is it and why? What measures would you put into place if you had the power or authority, what changes would you make and why?
Answer or all of the above in a comment, only one aspect or comment generally with whatever thoughts or opinions you may have around this topic; I think it'll be interesting to see how people from different socio-economic backgrounds and countries feel about it.
