*When I first decided to take the IELTS exam, I knew it was going to be a challenging but necessary step toward my goals. Like many test-takers, I set my target scores early on: at least 8 for Speaking and Listening, and 7 for Writing and Reading. With a lot of preparation, I walked into the test room confident but also nervous about what awaited me.
When the results came out, I felt a mix of emotions. I was happy with my 8.5 in Reading and Listening, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. My Writing score was 7.5, which was above my target, but my Speaking score was only 7. That was the lowest among all sections, and ironically, the part I was most concerned about beforehand.*
*I knew immediately that my journey wasn’t over yet. Speaking had always been an area I wanted to excel in, not just to meet the IELTS requirement, but also to improve my overall communication skills. I wanted that Band 8 in Speaking.
That’s when I decided to take advantage of the OneSkill Retake option. Instead of retaking the entire IELTS exam, I focused solely on Speaking. This gave me the chance to prepare more effectively without the added pressure of the other three sections.
The preparation process wasn’t easy—I had to work on fluency, pronunciation, and building more natural responses to questions. I practiced mock tests, recorded myself, and worked on eliminating filler words and pauses. Most importantly, I pushed myself to sound more confident and engaging, even when talking about unfamiliar topics.
Finally, on the day of the OneSkill Retake, I reminded myself to stay calm and treat the test as a conversation rather than an interrogation. And it paid off—my Speaking score improved, and I was able to achieve a Band Score of 8.
This experience taught me an important lesson: setbacks are not failures, but stepping stones to improvement. The IELTS isn’t just about measuring English proficiency; it’s also about resilience, strategy, and self-growth.*
