Ever since the price of fuel started skyrocketing I have been taking a look at alternatives, just to figure out how to escape from the dependency trap. From changing the car to an electric one and use my own solar produced electricity most of the time, to try biodiesel. Being power independent in Portugal, makes me feel even worse depending so much from the utilities companies home. I even felt that independence harder when the big black out happened in Spain and Portugal a year ago, being independent in Portugal, I just did not suffer it.
On my last long drive to Portugal, while stopped at a gas station, I made the comment to the seller about the price and he told me he was surprised even biodiesel, produced out of vegetal oil and not linked at all to a fossil origin, had gone up in price.
The problem is that besides a big dependency in fossil fuel, the taxes added by governments to its price are an absolute abuse, that is basically the cause biodiesels are also expensive; taxes account for 60% of the fuel price in most countries. And beside cars, kerosene for planes and diesel for trucks is a problem.
Right now, with the push the Chinese industry is giving to electric car, I foresee fossil fuel cars will be soon replaced by electric ones, we will have to see how governments and big lobbies react to losing such a big amount of revenues from taxes and oligopolies.
The world has been so focussed on growth, countries have forgotten how weak you become with your sources for critical materials are so weak.
