we were just "planning" our summer vacation.
There isn't much planning involved at this stage however, as it is going to depend a bit on the weather. But what we have secured is a campervan for a week, rented courtesy of a friend. I have never seen it and he believes it is horrible and I trust him, but it will do us and for a week, we can be those kinds of people. Not sure if we qualify as trailer trash yet.
We are probably going to travel through the Finnish archipelago, which is great as I have barely been there in all these years and it is meant to be quite beautiful - weather permitting. We can't change the week we have the van, so whatever the weather is, it is. Hopefully it is warm and sunny, so we can swim along the way and enjoy the views, otherwise it might just be playing Skip-Bo on the side of the road.
I am looking forward to it, though I haven't driven one of these suckers before, which makes me a little nervous. But I reckon it will be a bit of an experience for us together, and I am guessing it is going to be an added experience having a puppy with us also, and unsure how much sleep anyone is going to get.
We are doing this trip because money is tight, but we wanted to do something away from home and since we can get the van for about 30% of what we would pay if getting a proper rental, it makes sense to do this rather than having places to stay. This way, we can eat mostly in the van, shopping wherever we want along the way. And there are heaps of places to stop, so it isn't an issue to find something. However, apparently some of the parks we would have to book ahead, as well as some of the ferries between the islands. Not sure how that works - it'll be fine.
I also think that it is going to be a little bit of a learning experience for Smallsteps to be crammed into a small space for hours on end, with very little to do. We have already said she can listen to audiobooks sometimes, but I said that we will sig "wheels on the bus" constantly also.
A few decades ago I was reading how planning a holiday is almost as good as going on one, and hopefully now that there is something in the pipeline, my wife will have something to look forward to and prepare for, other than just "time off" from work. I am also pretty sure that whatever we plan, is not going to happen anywhere like planned and it will end up more like one of those vacation comedies where everything goes wrong.
Sounds like the rest of life.
But yeah, since this is the first time I will be caravanning, I know there are a few people who read this who have a lot of experience and maybe if you want to drop some wisdom on your biggest takeaways, it would be appreciated.
