We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.
We Talk Friday Ep. 42: Best of the Winter
While I am disappointed by tonight's Halfpipe Final where Scotty James missed out on gold to cap off his brilliant career, I am glad that despite his own deep disappointment and admission he was holding back tears, he managed to be Australian enough to answer the question of what advice his younger self would give him right now with;
“Put a bloody smile on your face, you sook and go have a beer,”
I think we should all take that kind advice sometimes.
So I was wondering, what advice my own younger self would give me now, and I don't think it would be anywhere near as valuable as Scotty James would tell himself. I think it is because I haven't had a brilliant career full of success, so I reckon I would just say something like;
It is what it is. Man up.
What would younger you tell you now?
I don't know what my favourite bit of the Olympics this week has been, but I am glad that Australia has pulled a couple golds out of the bag, with one in the Moguls yesterday, which was pretty incredible considering one and two had the exact same score and they had to do a countback to the turn style points. And another in the women's snowboardcross today. But I reckon the favourite was in the women's halfpipe last night with the seventeen year old Korean coming back from a heavy crash in run one to take gold.
I am a sucker for underdogs and unexpected wins.
With no dog in the race for most of the events at the winter Olympics, I have enjoyed barracking for the teams that aren't likely to win. I loved seeing Italy score first against Sweden in the hockey, and even though they eventually lost, they played very well given their team, which has no NHL in it. They are coached by a Finn, Jalonen, who coached the Finnish team when they won gold four years ago, as well as a few golds at the World Championships. He had been hired to find a coach for Italy but instead suggested they just hire him to coach - a chance Italy jumped on.
For those watching, what have been your favourite bits so far?
